[xj] K & N Air Filters

However, we all know that nothing but an OEM filter would be found in
one of Gregory’s cars!

Absolutely correct: regular OEM Cooper’s filters. For the V12 cars it is
important to get e filters that have the shield in front of the manifold
intake. What is more, I remove them periodically and tap out the dirt.
It is amazing what comes out. This does not substitute for the regular
replacement of the filters but it means the engine is breathing more
easily.

Ok, another thought, comments please.

The K&N style uses a mineral oil coating. Possibilities of
damage to AFM ???

Just a thought.–

G’day Dave,
Speaking from experience, the K&N’s are only as good as their
owner,i.e,you gotta keep 'em cleaned and oiled.Every second
bloke who came in the door at the turbo shop were I worked
had one.Of course,I pickedtheir brain about there
effectiveness. Most swore buy them.Never did we have problems
with ‘dusting’ of the turbo compressor wheels where one was
used.Keep in mind the fact that the filter has a much harder
job to do in a turbocharged vehicle as oppossed to naturally
aspirated,so this was good testimony to the filtration
properties. However,we did find that the ‘uni’ type filter,or
sponge, had a very low success rate of catching said
dust. They just don’t have the surface area. And when
questioned about which filter to use,we would always
reccomend either the OE or equivelent ‘paper’ filter,or a
K&N.But for long drives in dusty conditions,a paper and
carry a spare.
I know I’m comparring filters in reference to a turbo
application, but if they work under that kind of load, then
they’re gonna work for you.Right?

All the best with your decision!

But, I’ll bet there’s a non-OE fuse or two!–

Actually Doug, our engines are so loose, we’d probably never know what the
effect of K&Ns would be on wear! Personally, I wouldn’t use them anyway.–

I’ve been using K&Ns on my Jags. No power increase on the XJ6, perhaps a
small increase on the XJS. Reusability is a nice feature.

As far as filtering and engine life goes, I think we are, excuse the
terminology, picking fly sh*t out of the pepper. I’ve had the K&Ns on my XJ6
for 7 or 8 years …about 60K miles. If something awful was gonna happen I
think I would have noticed by now. As it is the engine runs like a watch and
uses no oil at 143K miles. From my own experience I am hard pressed to say
that a K&N is significantly or even minutely sub-par. Nor can I say it is
particularly above-par.

I have decided to stick with the K&N.

Anyway, point of my post is, due to my computer taking a
dump during an order process, I ended up with 2.

I will pretty much lose a bunch of money returning it,
ending up with about a $10 refund.

If anyone wants one that fits their XJ6, IIRC 79.5-87 model
years, I will send it to you free of charge. I can’t do
much with it and will gladly pass it along to anyone who is
OK with using them. K&N stock # E-2350, if you want to
check. Completely in the package unused.

E-mail me with your info off list. First come first served.–
