[xj] Long distance diagnosis wanted

Well, not actually a diagnosis. For the first time in
years, I have a fastener to spare after a repair job. I
replaced the water pump on my 1973 Series I, which required
removing the bracket that locates the aircon compressor.
There are two or three 9/16’’ bolts and a couple of 5/8’’
bolts holding it on. I’ve reinstalled it, and I have a
9/16’’ bolt (about 2’’ long) with nut, washer and lock washer
left over. Where does it go? It’s not in an obvious place,
and I can’t figure out where it might be. Any thoughts?
(Neither the factory reprint or Haynes is of any use at
all. Why would they show me how to unscrew a hose clamp,
but not where the fasteners for the compressor are located?)–

Are you sure it is related to the AC compressor and not the water pump,
Ian - and there is nobody around to have done the ‘add-an-extra-bit’
joke on you… ?

The AC was an ‘afterthought’, and somewhat makeshift attachments were
devised and maybe changed over the years, which may explain the lack of
details in the manuals. However, they may also have consider that when
dismantling some records would be kept for reassembly of a somewhat
simple task…

I have the SIII and am equally puzzled by the number of bolts down
there. The essential ones are of course the pivot bolts - and I still
wonder why they didn’t use a through bolt with a distance piece for
easier compressor removal and adjustments. But on mine I couldn’t find
any bolts of your description beyond the pivot bolts, but a SI owner may
have a clue…?
