[xj] More of the tappet guide saga

For those of you following the story, here’s the latest:

Finally got the old tappet guide out (pics at: http://photos.yahoo.com/dtgolder
and an album name of: “Tappet Guide Out (Finally)”)

Tried a number of different ways to get this thing out, with little success.
Among them, levering it out with a seal puller, trying to tap it out with a
slide hammer, etc. The limiting factor was not having a lot of room, and trying
to avoid damaging the head.

What finally worked was drilling a small hole in each side of the tappet guide,
and then modifying a $5 battery terminal puller so it fit into the holes, and
the limited space around the tappet guide. Used a piece of wood to protect the
head surface (see pics). Worked well.

Next step is to press in a used guide/tappet, install the stakedown kit, and
put everything back together.

Thanks for everyone’s help so far…I’ll keep you all posted.

Good job getting that guide out, and thanks for sharing the solution with us.
The photos are very useful and tell the story pretty well, especially the part about
the hours spent trying to lever it out.

Hope none of us ever need to use that trick, but as somebody who (gasp) doesn’t have a stakedown
kit in, it lets me breathe a little easier knowing that if the day comes that I heat the dreaded clatter,
I won’t necessarily be in for a head job.

Glad you were able to do the job with minimal tear down.

Thanks again and congratulations,
