[xj] More on timing

Okay folks, just which post on the distributor corresponds with cylinder no.
6?

I foolishly ripped into this project w/o determining exactly where 6 is, and
there seems to be some disagreement amongst all the discussion here.
Is it (looking at the dist. from the side, the front of the car to your right)

  • at the top, closest to the block/water pump
  • at the 1:30 position, angled towards the water pump
  • at 3:00, facing the front of the car
  • or at 4:30, angled away from the block

My rotor is angled towards the 4:30 mark, a 45 degree angle, at the point
when I’m assuming the no. 6 cyl. is approaching the top. It then takes a
small rotation of the engine (which I normally miss when blipping the starter
w/ the key) to reach the 17 BTDC mark.
Slap on the wires and check for a spark. And no start. So what am I doing
wrong here?

Dylan,On ours, it’s the one closest to the power-steering pump filler cap. Alex 79xj6 Copper925@aol.com wrote:

6?..

Believe it or not, I was just into this yesterday after re-routing my
spark plug wires. I discovered that the ONLY way to get it right is as

follows. 1. Manually rotate the engine until the zero deg./TDC mark is

lined up with the indicator on the main engine pulley. 2. Pull the
distributor cap off. 4. Look which direction the rotor is facing.
This is your #1 position for the 1st cylinder spark plug near the
firewall. 5. Looking downward at the distributor, it will be turning
ANTI-CLOCKWISE when running. Just re-do the spark plug wires starting
from the #1 position. Note: It is possible to rotate the entire
distributor plus 60 deg. or minus 60 deg. to actually relocate the #1
position. Mine just happens to appear at the top at about the 11:00
area as you indicate. It’s the LOBE for the pick-up that actually
fires whichever plug is aligned to the #1 position. From here on it’s
simple.
The firing order on my 86 VDP is 1-5-3-6-2-4 which I beleive is the same
for all
SII & SIII. (Don’t know about the SI, but it’s probably the same).
The plugs are numbered from the rear to the front of the engine.
