[xj] need alternate alternator

My 1985 XJ12 5.3L HE has trouble keeping up on electrical power. On the road
there is not much problem, but since most of my driving is in town in
traffic, I spend a lot of time at idle. The 75 amp Lucas alternator just
can’t keep up with the cooling fans, ac fans, lights and wipers. The
unpleasant alternative is driving around Orlando in the summer without using
the climate control. I’ve had the charging system checked, and it puts out
near specs. The factory alternator is designed to cut out at idle. (I
guess those roundabouts have many advantages over traffic lights)

Does anyone know of a replacemet alternator that will fit? I’d like to find
something in the 200 amp range if possible, that puts out at least some
current at idle. Ideally I’d like to use a GM/Delco or Ford/Mototcraft
unit.

John’s Cars sells a kit to retrofit a GM alternator in the stock location.
I have described a way to mount a GM alternator in a non-stock location
(see Kirby’s book).
