I removed the intake elbow and concertina from the throttle body of
my car this weekend, to check the butterfly clearance. I also
gently cleaned it up with carb cleaner and a soft cloth. Along the
way I noticed that the bottom of the manifold is filled to about
1/4 depth with a black oily residue.
I can only guess that this is years worth of condensed crankcase
oil fumes.
I can hold the butterfly open and carefully dip a screwdriver in
the oil, it is liquid.
I tried pulling the small rubber cap off the stub of pipe on the
underside of the manifold, fully prepared for the goop to drip out.
It didnt.
As far as I can tell the goop isnt causing any problems. The
engine doesnt burn oil, and the (recent) compression and leak down
tests all came up good.
Has any one seen this before, and is it a problem?
How do I clean it out?
Thanks.–

Andy, get an old sock, prop the throttle open wide and stuff the sock down in
to soak the stuff up. You can use a cleaner sock with gas or paint thinner
later to clean it nicely. There was so much in our SII, that I had to siphon
first!–

It’s entirely normal. But I’m not sure why it’s not draining from
the spigot on the bottom of the intake manifold when you remove the
cap…mine leaves a nasty mess on the driveway if I remove the
cap.–
