[xj] OK, why is my glove box clicking?

Today I began what will surely be the long process of trying
to get my car smogged and registered in California. It is
currently registered in Nevada. Couldn’t do it as for some
reason it needed an ‘‘enhanced’’ smog. Now I need to go to
the DMV first and start the paperwork in California but
under my name instead of previous owner. Fine. But not
today. Apparently it is a State holiday today - Caesar
Chavez Day in California. Nice to know. Anyway, I’m home
now but when I shut down my car in the garage I noticed that
my glove box was ticking/ clicking almost like there was a
turn signal in there. After a moment it stopped. Did they
do something at the smog place I need to know about?
Anybody?

Thanks as always, Kim–

Mine did that as well for a while. It turned out that it was
leaking vacuum; there are actuators back there for the ventilation
system. As smog control is integral to vacuum, I suspect that a
hose has been split or possibly left off.

Another possibility: the circuit breaker box is immediately below the glove
box and when one breaks it clicks. A long shot I’ll admit, but worth
checking out
and easy. BT________________________________________

Well, I just returned from the smog place due to your
suggestion Eric. By the time I got there my battery charge
was in the red on the gauge. Hoses all were fine, but… I
tried recycling the door lock with my remote and the clicking
started and stopped again. I had seen the tech open my car
with the key rather than the remote, so apparently that had
caused the clicking and the battery drain for some reason. I
reset the door lock with the key. All is quite in the glove
box. Tonight I’ll put a trickle charge on it. Fingers
crossed. Thanks guys. Kim–

Kim,

Your Series III has a remote door lock/unlock feature?

AFAIK this was not a factory installed feature. The modification to

add on has been discussed on this list, and it’s on my to do list for at
least one of my Series III. But I don’t think it is stock. Can you
explain more about your remote?

Hey Paul,
You are right - it is definitely an after market feature. But
I’m pretty sure it was installed when the car was new. The
name on it is ‘‘Marksman’’, a company not in business now. When
I got the car I took out the car phone, but decided to keep
the remote mostly because it worked well. That and the fact
that it really is handy to have. It is very basic with only a
lock and an unlock button.

Are you going to be at the car show at Spanish Landing again
this year? Kim–

Kim,

Thanks for the info on the remote locking. Doug Dwyer wrote about

putting a remote locking system in and I plan to do this in the future.

I have a full JCNA concours schedule planned for this year

including: 10 April San Luis Obispo; 15 May Los Angeles; 17 July San Diego;
1 Oct Idyllwild; 29 Oct Tucson and ?? November Phoenix.

Will you be going to the XKs Unlimited event in San Luis Obispo the

weekend of 8-10 April?

I note that you do not have the largest Jaguar show in North America on your
schedule: Jaguars-on-the-Island, July 30th, Victoria, British Columbia.
??? The featured model this year: the E-Type but every Jaguar,
regardless of age, model or condition is welcome on the field.

Gregory,

The JOTI event is on my "concours wish list" and not on my "concours

planned to do list" this year. The other six concours events are all
within a thousand mile round trip from my home and easily achievable within
a day drive or with only a one or two night stay. The event in Victoria is
in a different league since it would require almost a 3,000 mile round trip
with multiple night stays along the way.

I have not completely given up on the JOTI event, but will have to see

how things go with work, family, cars, and the other concours events before
I decide for certain whether or not to go to the JOTI event this year.

BTW, we'd love to see you and your lovely Black Cherry Series III

Vanden Plas here in San Diego for our JCNA concours on 17 July. Should we
count you in?

Paul M. Novak

Paul,
I had that SLO event on my calendar but then as luck would
have it a friend has decided to come visit for the weekend
so it’s now a no go.
I can offer some over night lodging here in Pebble Beach for
your family if that helps you achieve your concours wish
list. You are welcome anytime.
I have put the San Diego date on my calendar so maybe I can
pop in to that one and say hello if I don’t cross paths with
you before that time.

Gregory,
Good to know about your event. Sounds great and Victoria
must be beautiful about then!
