[xj] overrun valve

Hello folks,
Thanks for all the help extended from all members.
My car suddenly started to have rough idle and dies when the AC is
on while in gear. I replaced the spark plugs, intake manifold
hoses, fuel filter and pump with no success! I dismantled the
throttle body and overrun valve for cleaning and checking for
leaks. I am not sure about the correct installation of the overrun
valve, does the spring go into the manifold as seen in the parts
catalogue or the into the housing?
When I remove and block the vacum line to the advance mechanism of
the distributor, the idle gets worse!? Any thoughts?

G’day everyone, quick question which direction does the over
run valve go? is it spring up or down?
hopefully up cause that’s the way I put it back in. I coulda
sworn that it came out that way but
I stumbled across a picture in the Haynes book and it shows
the spring faceing down.
thanks!!!–

This has come up before. As I recall, whatever is illustrated in the manuals
is incorrect, so if the manaul shows it “spring down” then the correct
orientation is “spring up”

Thank you Doug.
I guess if one relied on manuals alone they can get into a
world of hurt.–

G’day Doug and Jeff,
I just happen to have mine removed at the moment. All the
manuals and the parts catalogue show it wrong way up. This is really a
non-issue though 'cos it can’t be fitted upsde down, the hole in the
manifold is smaller than the spring diameter.

Yeah, I’ve got one on the bench right now and there’s only one way
mine can go in - spring up. Which is almost counterintuitive…??–

Thanks John, that is what I thought but my spring actually
fit in either direction. perhaps it’s not an original. by
looking at the design I thought logically the part would be
useless if the spring went into the manifold instead of the
housing.
speaking of which… is there a certian way to set the
adjuster screw? kinda like tighten it down then back it off
2 turns? I can’t seem to find anything in the Haynes about it.
thanks–

AFAIK, it is not intended to be routinely adjusted but I’d think tightening
it by one or two turns to compensate for loss of tension couldn’t hurt.

Factory manual doesn’t tell you anything either. Seems it was ‘factory set
and forget’. I tightened the screw on mine by several turns and the vacuum
at idle went up, which seemed like a good thing to me.

Hm, John - the overrun valve should be firmly closed at idle
vacuum…it’s only supposed to allow extra air into the manifold at
high overrun vacuum. There are some interesting bi-effects from a faulty
overrun valve…
