[xj] Power steering pulley flange/Motorized door locks

XJ Listers,

With the holiday break, I’m trying to catch up on some deferred maintenance
on my wife’s 87 VdP (mfg 8-86). Needless to say, ‘simple’ items have become
difficult, and I would appreciate some help…

1st item: replace the weak power steering pump (I tell her that it’s great
for her arms’ muscle tone, but she’s getting tired of ‘Armstrong’ Power
Steering, when the motor is at idle, and the assist is really needed). The
replacement pump does not have the three hole flange to mount the pulley on.
The instructions that came with the pump say that a ‘puller’ can remove the
pressed on flange from the old pump, and that it can be reinstalled by using
a bolt/nut arrangement threaded into the tapped hole at the shaft end. I
have a gear puller, and tried to remove the flange without much success, but
I didn’t really muscle it very hard, since I’m fearful of screwing things up.
Does anyone know how to do this (i.e. apply heat, use a bigger wrench +
cheater, etc), or should I return the ‘new’ pump and try to get one with the
flange already in place?

2nd item: Intermittent function of the power door locks (either from the key
or from the inside ‘flap’). These are the motorized type, not the
solenoidal ones. I suspect that this is due to a faulty ground or wiring
harness connection rather than the door switch being bad, but wondered if any
lister could either verify the diagnosis, and/or tell me where the most
likely ‘loose’ ground and harness connectors are? By the way, the first
thing I tried was replacement of the (inline) fuse, with no result. I have
an electrical manual that says there are two connectors, one in the door and
one in the door post (which is supposedly where the ground is, as well). I
took the door panel off, and really couldn’t see where the door connector is;
I haven’t tried to get to the door post connector yet. Is it hard to access
the door post connector /ground?

Thanks in advance, and happy holiday season to all!

P.S.: Thanks to those who responded about my previous enquiry regarding
coverlays; though the VdP needs it, not the SII!

It is just very tight; takes a lot of grunt to get it off. The more
difficult issue is how exactly to put the flange on your new pump. You
won’t be able to just drive it on, since you have no access to the other
end of the shaft to support it (unless you strip the new pump first!).
When I rebuilt my pump, I first fitted the flange to the shaft by
cooling the shaft in liquid nitrogen (to shrink it a bit) and put the
pulley in the oven (to grow it a bit), and then just dropped the two
together easy. As the temperature equalised it gripped. You may find
that just heating the flange up to 100C or so will do it on
reinstallation, but don’t get it too hot, otherwise you may cook the
shaft seal.

Hi fellas,

I can’t offer any helpful advice here but I do have a question regarding the
power steering pump and it’s associated brackets, which one of you might be
able to help me with.

I am referring to the cast bracket that fixes to the engine: is the mounting
of it exactly parallel to the length of the car? Or is there a slight
variation in it so that it squares up against a non-parallel part of the
engine?

I have lost my power steering pump belt three times in the last 6 hours of
driving… thought I’d fixed it but evidently not! I am adding to the jag
reputation for unreliability by being observed refitting the belt in all
manner of public place.

If someone has their pump out at the moment it might be easy for them to
advise.

Thanks!!

Jason

Putting the pulley back on is easy… But do not hit it please you will
harm the pump. All it takes is a bolt that will screw into the shaft of
the pump then you will need a washer and nut. just put the pulley on the
shaft, then the bolt with the washer and nut on it will screw in to the
shaft just hold the bolt and turn the nut it will push the pulley on job
done…the bolt and nut with come with most pumps they call it the
install kit… I would think the part store would have one you could use.
The puller we use to remove the pulley is small but we put the impact to
it and off it comes.
