[xj] Propshaft|Driveshaft Center Bearing Mount

I removed the center bearing mount from my driveshaft
tonight, and I was prepared with four new bushings and a new
metalastic U-shaped mount. However, it now appears that
perhaps there is supposed to be another bushing through the
center of the mount, as well?

There clearly has not been a bushing there for quite a
while, but it certainly does look like there is supposed to
be, right around the large bolt in the center of this photo:

Can anyone confirm if I am missing anything?

Tom,

I have removed and replaced two center bearings on my Series III saloons

and the picture you have doesn’t look anything like what I removed and
replaced.

What year and model Jaguar do you have?

I recommend that you include year/model/engine information in any

postings. Otherwise people will be guessing, not answering, or offering
incorrect advice. You can add this to your signature, the subject line, or
the body of each email you send to the list. That will help others to help
you.

Looks like a Series 1 style centre mount.

There isn’t supposed to be a bushing here, my Haynes manual shows
a number of washers in here - I didn’t have these on mine when I
replaced mine last year and I can’t see what they would do.

The bolt fits through a large opening on the centre bearing but
doesn’t seem to carry any weight - I believe its there to hold the
prop shaft in place if the metalastic u shape mount fails–

Hi Tom,
I looked at the Series I workshopshop manual and the parts
catalogue and it appears that this bolt was provided to help align the
shaft in the vertical plane, no sign of any bushing. The centre bearing
is supposed to be 1/8 inch offset from the centre line and looking at
your pic the bolt appears to be slightly off centre. The parts catalogue
shows a nut on the lower end of this bolt.

Thanks, John, it seems that bolt is there for retain the
driveshaft in case all of the rubber mounts break free? I
put the whole thing together and my thunking problems are
resolved. Yet another of those jobs that took a lot of time
the first time around and that I could do very quickly if I
ever had to do it again!

Sorry to bring back from the dead…I have a 70 Series 1 XJ6 with the same mount shown above. I am looking to source the rubber washer/grommet that sandwich the bottom bracket.

Item #11 here: http://xks.com/i-6920153-jaguar-propshaft-mount-co-36791.html

Thanks in advance for the help!!!
