A) anytime anywhere
B) sometimes depending on the surface
C) only on a rainy day
D) none of the above
My 87’ XJ6 falls into the C category. She runs fine with good power at 30
mph or above. I would like to know if this is normal.
I do get a funny staling just after she starts, some times she will die.
most of the time she stumbles then smoothes out. She idles at 900 rpm and
700 rpm when in gear. If I hit the gas very fast and let off, she will also
stumble, rpm’s will drop to 300-400 rpm and then recover with in a second or
two. There is a small puff of black smoke and she smells rich during
starting. Any Ideas?

Gordon: stumbing when cold: Faulty coolant temperature sensor; an AFM that
some previous owner has played with (they are sealed for a reason)…

Gordon,
At approx 4200 pounds with a 2.88 axle ratio, “lightin’ the hides” is pretty
much out of the question with these cars. So, yes, your experience is
typical. As for running problems I’d say that the temp sensor would be the
first, easiest, cheapest and probably successful guess–judging from your
description.

C on the 84 (205R70s). C- on the VDP (215R70s). It almost never rains here,
and I never tried on a wet surface, so I’m not positive. I’d guess it would
take rain on an oil-soaked surface to break it loose.

well you poor series 3 owners LOL!! (JOKES!!! i LOVE series 3 cars!)… i
own a 1971 XJ6 Series 1 and i would have to say that i would be almost an A on
that… if im doing a U-Turn i can almost ALWAYS spin my wheels if i give it
to her (not that i try!)… im only running 205/65’s but they are surprisingly
grippy in the wet… they do spin when the boot is sunken into the carpet (or
so to speak).
Admitidly the engine is only 8,000 miles old (since rebuild) and has a ported
and polished head and has been bored out .20 thou.
Take care everbody and enjoy thoose Cats!
