[xj] Radio Ariel

At this time I am waiting to receive an appropriate Owners
Handbook for my 1980 XJ III. I have been advised that the car
radio areal should rise and fall when the ignition is turned
on and off rather than raising an lowering when the radio is
turned on and off. Is this correct?

Thanks

Well Peter…assuming it is original, the aerial will rise when the radio is
turned on and if the radio was on when the ignition was last shut off then
it will rise when the ignition is turned on again; it will retract 30
seconds after the radio is turned off, OR 30 seconds after the ignition is
turned off.
In other words, the radio AND the ignition have to be on for the aerial to
remain raised; when either is turned off the aerial retracts after 30
seconds (this buffering period is to prevent repeated raising and retracting
if the ignition is shut on and off quickly).

How is yours working? If it does not work as described then someone has been
fiddling with the wiring.

NB: keeping the shaft clean and well lubricated (silicone) will keep the
unit working properly for decades. It is the friction-causing dirt that
kills the aerial units; that said, the later (post 81) units were of much
better quality.

In reply to a message from Dr Gregory Andrachuk sent Sat 29 Sep 2012:

Gregory, thank you for your response. ‘‘Fiddling with the
wiring’’ aptly describes what appears to have happened. The
unit itself is a rather sad bit of Chinese plastic far from
the standards of the original. There is no ‘motor drive’
relationship between the radio itself and the aerial, though
it does function well as a signal receiver. It always rises
when the ignition is turned on and drops when turned off.
Having once set fire to a motorcycle in my misspent
‘‘fiddling’’ youth I have a 50 year aversion to working on
anything but the very basic electrical components of motor
vehicles. This job will wait until all others are completed
and then be passed on to an appropriately qualified person
to undertake.

Cheers

Since this seems to be an aftermarket installation; a PO may have have
changed the operations characteristics, Peter…

As Gregory says the initial function is that both the radio and the ignition
may be ‘on’ - and the delay as described. The delay may or may not be
present, and the raise/lower may be related to the radio ‘on/off’ only -
allowing using the radio with the ign ‘off’. Or, alternatively, to allow the
radio to be used in the ‘first’ position - but also of course with ign on
the ‘run’ position. But in principle; the aerial should retract if the radio
itself is turned off’ - whatever the PO has done to the ignition
connections - there simply seems no point in having the aerial ‘up’ if the
radio is ‘off’…

But POs sometimes do the strangest things…

There may be a good reason why the aerial is connected to an
ignition supply rather than the switched aerial supply from
the audio unit. It was not uncommon when these cars were
made for there to be no aerial feed from the audio unit. The
options were to (a) remove the covers from the audio unit
and solder in a switched feed, (b) fit a separate switch, or
© connect the aerial to the ignition supply which results
in operation as described.
We are perhaps at times too hasty to criticize previous
owners.
On the other hand…it could have been fitted by someone
who didn’t really know what they were doing. :-)–

Or knew, but did not care, Dave…:))

This cat can be skinned any way one wants to - it is a matter of taste at
which times you want the aerial to operate. So you are right; there is not
fair to criticise POs on this account - just note that their tastes differed
from yours, and rectify as required…
