[xj] Re: Badged '87 XJ6's secretly called Xk40's?

Henry,

You are treading on egg shells here, just because some don’t like the shape
is no reason to call the car a mistake. Have a good look at the current XJ8
mechanics/body structure compared to the XJ40.

I don’t think it was a mistake, however like all models it did have teething
problems.

As for why, I have no idea. The XJ40 turned out to be a colossal
mistake,
did not sell very well, and has massive design and build problems. They
could, and should, have put that engine and transmission into the Series
III and sold it. It would have been a much better car.

A colossal mistake? Did not sell very well?

I don’t think so.
The XJ40 solved many of the problems on the XJ6 and sold about 208,000 in
8> years as compared to the XJ6 selling 402,000 in 21 years. In the 4
headlight version it looks just as good as the XJ6.

Dr Gregory,

Are you sure you don’t mean “Feral”, those US/Canadian ones
are very different to the rest

Dennis, if by “federal” you means US cars (this is not what “federal”
means
to Jaguar. Canadian cars were also “federal”), there is no way of
ascertaining the VIN of the last car, as far as I know. But the 87 model
year ended with 461709, and the 86 year with 431604. But the numbers are
consecutive so the 87 model year VINs include the xj40 cars produced in
and> for 87.
The VINs are not sorted out for national markets. It is entirely
possiblw for 340047 to be an 82.5 car destined for Australia, while my
Canadian car is 340046.
