You are treading on egg shells here, just because some don’t like the shape
is no reason to call the car a mistake. Have a good look at the current XJ8
mechanics/body structure compared to the XJ40.
I don’t think it was a mistake, however like all models it did have teething
As for why, I have no idea. The XJ40 turned out to be a colossal
did not sell very well, and has massive design and build problems. They
could, and should, have put that engine and transmission into the Series
III and sold it. It would have been a much better car.

The XJ40 solved many of the problems on the XJ6 and sold about 208,000 in
8> years as compared to the XJ6 selling 402,000 in 21 years. In the 4
headlight version it looks just as good as the XJ6.
