[xj] Re: Refinish dash on XJ6

Craig:
On my 77 coupe I have replaced the original dash with a completely new
wood paneling by Autostyle in the UK; the quality is MUCH higher than
the original and it fots beautifully. Cost for mine was about GBP 150.
Well worth it!

“I pulled the dash out of my '83 XJ6 with the intent of refinishing the
woodwork. The finish on mine has cracked and faded over the years and i
fiqured it couldn’t be that hard to strip the old finish off and then
stain and varnish it.
What is the coating on these dashes?”

It’s polyester lacquer which requires serious solvent to remove…

Good luck

I’ve got a new dash from Autostyle too, for my Series 1 (The Beast). Got a
custom ski-slope too, to replace the aluminium plate round the gearstick.
Looks very very nice indeed. I’m waiting 'til the Spring to fit it though,
since
I don’t have a garage to work in.

Also picked up a new burled dash for the Series 3 at this Autumns JEC
spares day. Looks pretty good. Paid 125 for it.

With new dashboards as cheap as this, and the amount of work needed
to recondition the original one, I can’t really see any point in spending
several days working on it.

Fit a new one, and keep the old one in case originality ever becomes a
huge issue.
