While this tranny swap is a wee bit little too hoon for me at this time
(never say never, even though I bought the BW66 rebuild) I could see an
“easy” mod using–are you ready DHD?–a comparator circuit that could
electronically shut off the overdrive (as is possible with late model
trannys) should the engine RPMs drop below a given threshold(start to lug
too much). In fact, I’m thinking about doing this to my F-150. On steep
grades I have to pull it out of OD for the same reason.
Or maybe, instead of a comparitor, we could build an “inclinometer.”
Oooooh.
Inclinometer sounds easiest yet!
Remember the game “Operation”?
(“Surgeon” had to remove certain anatomical parts with a steady hand, from the
“patient”,
or contact with the game piece would cause a buzzer to sound.)
{First draft}
A metal rod, hanging inside a looped wire would contact the loop,
when the angle of the car exceeds a certain inclination. Wired to coil of a
relay,
with the [# 87A } terminal wired to kill power to the O/D switch,
would shut off the O/D at a predetermined uphill angle.
Adjusting the wire loop could determine angle of incidence.
Buffering though, would be needed to keep road irregularities,
and / or acceleration from causing an unwanted fault condition.

Trey,
The 700R4 …and, as far as I know…your Ford trans, should downshift
from O/D to direct drive automatically as engine load increases. Now, our
BW66’s have to be nearly brow-beaten into a part-throttle-downshift but
“modern” transmissions should not need too much more than a nudge.
If we keep it up with comparators and relays and such our Jags are gonna
start looking like the avionics compartment of a 757 . Wow ! I love it !
Darrin, you are confusing us with our cousins, (thrice removed)
We’re Hoons! 8^)

Sounds like a Rube Goldberg special to me. You guys aren’t up to your
normal Hoon standards …Wouldn’t it be easier to modify a mercury switch
inserted into a level to complete the circuit prior to relays etc.? 8^)
