[xj] Re: Transmission (was centreshaft)

@alan_khaw

Hi Doug (and everyone else)

I brought the Jag down to the transmission mechanic and was shown the
leak. The leak was from a piece that is bolted (4 bolts) onto the left
bottom side of the middling part of the transmission. The mechanic
believes the gasket is blown. Anyway, it will cost A$250 to change the
gasket and “service” the transmission.

The Centreshaft was actually used to describe the shaft on which the
shifter is linked to. Sorry for any confusion. It goes left to right
and is about 12 inches long (seriously, no jokes about 12" shafts
please).

Anyway, hopefully he is right.

Alan,
Perhaps we are talking about the servo covers (?). There is one on each side
of the transmission. Left side (relative to driver’s position, facing
forward) has 6 bolts, right side four. Each has a gasket and cover a servo
piston. The servo pistons have 0-ring type seals. These servo covers are
approximately 4-5" round.

The centershaft is what we Yanks would call a manual selector shaft and it
should have seals as well but damned if I could see a listing for any.

You mentioned $250 (Aus) for the job which is about $150 (USA). I’d say this
is about right if both servos were being resealed and the transmission
service was included. That is, of course, if we really are talking about the
same thing !
