[xj] Re: [xj fuses and FORD

Wilson et al: this cannot be repeated enough, especially as we have new
members joining all the time. Those glass fuses often go bad under the cap
where the break cannot be seen. The rule is: for ANY, repeat, ANY electrical
failure, replace the fuse with a known good one. It is not sufficient to
visually check the fuse. The S3 car, especially, is very STURDY and the
components are long-lived (stop throwing the tomatoes; I can prove this by
the 3 cars in my garage); electrical component failures are most often
either fuse-related or connector-related. And let’s be realistic: the
youngest S3 car is a December 1992 model. That makes it 8 years old. After 8
years, let alone 25 years for some S2 cars and more for S1 cars, a clean-up
of connectors is not to be unexpected, and does not qualify the dirty
connector as a defect. A defect is this: my Ford Taurus, owned since new: 6
interior door handles have broken preventing egress (right, 6; 2 of them
twice, and I think another is on the way out). Now Ford claims that this is
not a defect, not a warranty problem, and I suppose they are waiting until
the first fiery crash when someone’s wife or child cannot get out of the car
because the handle broke in their hand. Now THAT is a defect. As long as
Ford keeps providing money (actually, Jaguar is presently MAKING money hand
over fist) and leaves Jaguar alone (as it pretty much has done) then things
will be alright. God help us if they start having a hand in designing. Did I
mention the 3 transmissions this Taurus has had? The 2 steering racks? The 4
CV joints? The broken tailgate electrical connectors? Should I go on? So
much for New World engineering. This Taurus was, as the windscreen sticker
said, “Built with pride in Chicago”. It must have been built on the Labour
Day holiday by the cleaning staff. At purchase (having waited 3 months for
delivery), I took it directly from the dealer to a body shop to have two
panels realigned (sent there by the dealer since they couldn’t do it!).

Subject: AW: [xj] HEATER BLOWERS (FAN)

When I was but a youth, I bought my first SII XJ12. One of the many
non-functional items was the heater blower. I suffered an entire british
winter with no heat. When it got really bad I’d pull over, open the bonnet &
bask in the heat of the V12 gas-guzzler. Eventually I got fed up &
determined to fix it… methodically… with a volt meter. So I started at
the fans & worked my way back (Test. Test. Test.) to the fuse box. Whereupon
I found that there was power at the fuse box, but it would go no further
despite a perfectly good glass fuse. Oh really ? A sceptical check with the
continuity meter revealed the fuse to be dry jointed under the cap.
Gregory, if only you’d been there for me 10 years ago ! You cannot imagine
the amount of cursing, weeping, wailing & nashing of teeth which ensued. An
entire winter, with no heat, for the sake of a 20 pence fuse ?
AAAaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrggggghhhhhh !

Such are the joys of Jaguar ownership. Its like going to a tough British
public school. It makes a man out of you.

Wilson.

Replace the fuse. NEVER just look at the fuse in a S3 car. They can be
broken under the cap. I am willing to bet that if you replace the fuse,
squeezing the cradle first to ensure a good contact, your problem will be
solved.

Subject: [xj] HEATER BLOWERS (FAN)

Hi all,
86 XJ-6, 123K miles. All been going well lately. Starting to get cold
now here in NY. Yesterday AM, no heater blower!!! Checked fuses in aux
box
under passenger dash, all look OK.
Can someone give me a step by step troubleshooting procedure please.
Heater seems to work OK, get hot air wafting through when I get up to
speed, I can hear the A/C compressor clutch engage, I can hear the
whirling
of the air box when I go from low to auto to high to defrost, BUT NO
HEATER
BLOWER ( FAN) at any time.

Thanks to all who reply

Ed

Just because of a few of these, I’ve replaced all our fuses with Buss or
equivalents – remember the difference between the Lucas and US ratings, of
course.
