[xj] Remove the rear end

All:

I hope to remove the rear end from my parts car for future rebuilding. Any
hints on the process of detaching it from the body would be appreciated.

More important, this car has a serious case of the tin worm. The outer
sills are gone and the inner sills deteriorated. The floor is holey on the
drivers side front.

I concerned that lifting it from the rear might cause it to fold in the
center. Again, suggestions are appreciated. Everything else is removed
from the car including doors, trunk, hood, engine transmission and interior.

Hi Lou,

I just finished doing the same thing to a very rusty 72. I have also done
this a couple of times in my E-Type. The big difference in the 2 cars is the
exhaust. In the e it goes under the IRS in the XJ it goes through it. If you
take the exhaust out it is not a bad job to remove. One part that is
sometimes stuck is the front bushing on the radius arms, it is still easier
to remove the front because you have to remove the lower shock to get the
rear radius arm bolt out. I found it easier to leave the cage mounts on the
cge and remove the bolts from the mount to the frame. The other things to do
is disconnect the driveshaft, ebrake cable and brake fluid feed hose. Once
all of these are done the whole IRS will lower out of the car. After you
have done it once or twice you will get good at it. I think if I had to do
any brake work I would just take the unit out and work on it outside of the
car. On the E-type you have a panel under the rear seat that gives access to
changing the pads but for anything else I would not hesitate to drop the
unit.

If you are worried about the rust you might try using blocks of wood on the
jack stands to distribute the weight. If everything else is out of the car
then it is pretty light. I sent my rusty shell to the junk yard sitting on 4
jackstands.
