[xj] Replacing windscreen gaskets

Tyler:

The parts you need are the body to stainless rubber, and the stainless to
glass rubber.
Generally speaking, the “windshield seal” can be reused; this piece just
serves to cushion the glass against the metal lip of the body aperture and
unless it has been sliced through y careless removal, it can serve again.
The glass is actually sealed to the body by urethane.
The two rubber pieces are “finishers”, not seals.
So, you need BBC5889 and BAC4794, and you need two of each: the front and
rear rubber is identical. These are held in place by a thin bead of sealant.
They must NOT be stretched on fitting; the stainless to glass rubber should
be
packed" into the corners to allow for shrinkage (which is inevitable).
Otherwise you will find this piece will eventually pull out of the corners.
The outer rubber (body to stainless) also must not be stretched or it will
eventually separate at the join (which should always e at the centre bottom
of the screen).

The BAC1977 and BAC2288 are the rubber pieces that cushion the glass against
the body aperture - you do NOT need these if you can reuse the originals.

I see several different ‘‘seals’’ listed on Rock Auto – is
there a sealant in a tube on top of these gaskets? Here are
the numbers that are listed – manufactured by URO –
