[xj] Right Fuel Tank Guage Reading Faulty & Return Valves, Series III

Hello All.
In an earlier post, I reported having no voltage to the return valves. On
the contrary, in the key on position, right tank selected, I am getting
voltage to both return valves and the changeover valve; left tank selection
no voltage to either. I believe that part is OK, however the fuel guage goes
over to the dead empty position, right tank only. Also, fuel is returning to
both tanks when right tank selected.

Dash switch is working properly as per a diagnostic I found in the archives
as is the Inertia switch.
Connections behind the wheel arch are clean. Return switches are clicking
when you actuate the dash switch. What I noticed is that the two wire
connections from behind the wheel arch seem to be reversed.
In the right wheel well, white wire is joined to the black wire to the
return valve, black from the arch is joined to the white/burgundy tracer to
the return valve.
On the left side, I have the reverse. Which connection is correct and will
the correct connection solve my fuel guage reading problem and fuel tank
selection? I’m not sure that condeming the return valves will solve my
problem.

I did remove the changeover valve and on application of 12 volts it works
correctly.
correctly.
Best Regards

Splendid, splendid.

If fuel is returning to both tanks when right-side is selected, then the
left return valve is remaining open. It could be an electrical glitch or the
valve may be mechanically stuck.

OK, it sounds like the electrics are OK…at least the return valves are
getting voltage, that is.

What I noticed is that the two wire

OK, according to my diagram the white/purple wires go directly to the
changeover switch, so they will either have voltage or no voltage. Ground is
by black wires. Try reversing the wires on the right side and see what
happens.

Good luck
