[xj] rough running and misfiring S3--sometimes?

Nick: I wonder if you got my previous message about the CTS: it is not the
same as the temperature sender for the gauge (this is located at the centre
of the coolant rail and has a single green wire to it). If your performance
is somewhat better, then you probably needed to replace the coil anyway. But
I do agree that this seems to be an electrical problem, rather than directly
a fuel problem. I think it is time to move to the CTS, easy to replace, and
not expensive; there are generic replacements available.

: I just put in a new coil, same problem. I only took it for a short run,
: and the problem didn’t seem quite as bad, but it’s still ‘stuttering’.
:
: Today was very typical (before putting in the new coil). Started the car
: after it had been sitting in the cold all night, it started right up, and
: ran great for about 10 minutes, then the ‘skipping’ or ‘stuttering’ begins
: on acceleration. Once I get up to 70 (or any speed), it will hold it
: pretty well and not misfire, but any pressure on the gas and the
stuttering
: begins. If it wasn’t for the fact that this only happens once the car is
: warm, I would bet on it being fuel related, but because it only does it
: when the car is hot, I’m still thinking it’s electronics.
:
: So, what’s next, coolant temp sensor? And, to re-ask a previous question,
: is CTS the same one that the coolant gauge in the cockpit relies
: on?

An update here, and good news. It must have been the coil as Gregory
suggested. I commented that when I changed the coil, it was running much
better, but still had a bit of ‘stutter’ to it when accelerating, and
idling. My next purchase was going to be the CTS, but I decided to change
the plugs today. Bingo! New plugs along with the new coil has this car
idling puuurfectly, and the stutter is gone…this car is now running very
fast and smooth! I just took it out for a nice highway run, doing my best
not to go too much over the speed limit, and it’s just superb
now. Thanks to everyone who helped.

Happy in Ohio
