[xj-s] 1987 xjs-Ruff Idle

My 1987 xjs is presently in the shop for servicing and the mechanic is unable to determine the problem for a
ruff idle,he is very competent and I have had good experiences with him in the past but he is about to give up
any help would be greatly appreciated!! The car is in great shape with 35000 original miles,at idle the car runs
very ruff and almost seems like it is going to stall but does not–on the highway it runs great. He has changed
parts, plugs, carbon blasted the engine and tried everything he can think of but the problem still exists–

Try accelerating the car at a gradual pace (similar to moving between
streetlights spaced one block apart) and see if it does so smoothly. Then,
increase the speed (at idle) to about 1,000 rpm. If the car runs smoothly
during the two test, the TPS could be intermittent at the idle point and it
could be making good contact at less used portion of the potentiometer. An
87 with 30 K miles probably spend a great deal or time idling and wearing
the TPS at that point.
