[xj-s] 1988 XJ-S V12 HESS/GAS SMELL in trunk

1988 XJ-S V12 HESS/GAS SMELL in trunk … and it permeates
throughout the interior passenger compartment. Seems to happen
strongest just after I’ve fueled up … (venting vapors?) … and,
the gas guage is erratic fluctuating from full to half and then
back again) … (in my 86 XJ6 there was a carbon cannister that
sometimes overfilled … anything like that in the XJ-S?)

I’m going to replace the fuel filter now.

Any tips on searching these out or are there some common
problems I should look at?–

I would first check the hoses at the filler neck. The write-up on Fuel Tank
Issues at my website is mostly for the pre-facelift coupe but the are some
photos of the filler neck cabriolet. I expect the Hess is different, but you
might see some similarity. For example, there probably is a rubber sleeve
over the filler assembly neck and the tank neck, and also a small diameter
vapor vent tube. There probably is also an o-ring on the filler assembly
neck where it sticks down into the tank neck. Finally, on the coupes there
is a hose connected to a drain in the body cavity the filler neck assembly
fits into. It is supposed to drain filling spillage to the road but it will
drain into the boot if the hose is detached or leaking.

… (in my 86 XJ6

there was a carbon cannister that sometimes overfilled … anything like
that in the XJ-S?)

There is on the coupes. It’s in a cavity in front of the left front wheel.

Any tips on searching these out or are there some common problems I
should look at?

If any of the fuel hoses in the boot have been replaced determine if the new
hose is CARB-rated for low permeability. If ordinary fuel hose or even
ordinary EFI hose was used you will have fuel odors in the boot. Read all
about that issue in my write-up.

Many, many years ago I was trying to help Marty Sullivan with his
H&E. The lower tank was leaking fuel so badly that it was dripping
off the bottom of the car, making ugly spots on the pavement because
it would dissolve some of the undercoating on its way. We worked on
that car an entire afternoon without figuring out how to get that
lower tank OUT so we could see the underside of it.

So, the long and short of that is – I can’t help ya. Sorry.

In reply to a message from goldrush sent Mon 16 Jul 2012:

The fuel vent system is virtually identical to the coupe.
Main complication is the addition of the second fuel tank
and pump.

It is definitely possible that your vent system is non
funcitoning. There is a vent line to the carbon canister in
the left wheel well as you say.

If you let the car sit out in a hot day, open the fuel door
and push down on the spring loaded sealing cap. If there is
a large whoosh and possibly a crumpling sound, you’ve got a
jammed up vent system. Disconnect the vent line at the
carbon canister until you get it sorted properly (warning:
you will vent fuel vapors through that line, so be prepared
and don’t leave the car in an unventilated space!).

Here is an excellent treatise on the H&E fuel vent system:
