[xj-s] 1989 XJS convertible top hydraulics

Hello again!
Does anyone know how to bleed air out of the hydraulic system that
operates the convertible top on a 1989 XJS OTS?
The repair manual has no information on this topic, nor does ‘‘The
Book’’.
Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciaterd.

Thanks–

I nave a '92 Conv. Th hydraulics are probably identical.
My docs don’t discuss bleeding the system. However, the top is sort
of like power steering. Insure there is fluid and raise the topwith
the pump. Lower the top with the motor and do this untill the air
is purged.

The book describes the system as follows, verbatim.

''An electric motor is connected directly to the hydraulic pump. The
motor can rotate in either direction depending on powewr input for
raising or lowering the top.

The hydraulic pump is a crescent-type dsigmn.A change over valve
directs the oil delivery depending on the driven direction. Normal
system pressure is 190 psi.Two relief valves are used, one in each
pump otlet.‘’

I am sure yopu are awarethere is a manual valve that shunts the oil
to both sides for manual operations. It is on the pump.

If you continue to have trouble, I can scan and send a pix of the
hydraulic circuit to you.

My Jaguar ROM explains it precisely ( page 107 supplement C 19881/2
on )and I’ve done it so I know it works.
You have to remove the system from the car and then disconnect the
left hand side ram pipes at the pump. Submerge the two pipes in
hydraulic fluid and then fully extend the ram to prime with fluid.
Invert the ram cylinder, fully compress the ram and then reconnect
the pipes to the pump. Remove the reservoir filler plug and fill
the reservoir to the high mark, refit the filler plug.
Select the electric position on the manual/electric valve then
disconnect the pipes from the left hand ram itself and submerge
them in fluid. Then fully extend the right hand ram to prime.
Invert that ram, and fully compress it. Then reconnect the two
pipes to the left hand ram. Remove the reservoir filler again and
top up to the high mark. Put the system back in the car and operate
the hood sevral times. It sounds complicated but its quite quick to
do, took me about 1 hour in total and it’s been fine since.

The thing should bleed itself, shouldn’t it? Like, fill up the
reservoir and run it up and down a few times?

I dunno, just postulating.

I concur with Noel. My 90 had air in the lines and a low fluid
level in the reservoir. I added tranny fluid to the pump and
cycled the top several times. I had to add some more fluid and
cycle the top some more. This bled the air from the lines. I
suspect that there are some small bleed holes in the ram pistons
for just this purpose (or my rams are leaking by).–

Yep is does. Simply cycle the top up and down a bunch of times. The
air will naturally make its way to the top of the resovoir. I moved
my punp assembly into the trunk on my 89 to make way for my rear
seat and had to make all new lines, so my entire system was bone
dry. Within about 20 cycles of the top all was good. I had to fill
the res, twice during this proceedure.–

Wow!
Thanks for all your responses.
Actually Kirby was right - the system bleeds itself if you open and
close it a few times manually.
I guess if you are starting with no fluid at all you will have to
take it out of the car.

My ROM does not have the info. Nor does it have the Supplement C’’
Maybe youor ROM is for a 1992 car? Mine is for 1975 up to 1991
intro.
Thank for everything. The top is working fine again.
