[xj-s] 1990 xjs a/c evaporator

hi listers,

    i got the next questions for you. what does the a/c evaporator do?

how can i know if the one i got works or not??. Fact is im restoring a 1990
xjs conv. and the only parts i need is the entire a/c assembly box which
houses the heater core and evaporator and im sure the heater core is in good
condition but cant tell the same about the evaporator. these parts are very
expensive…where to find aftermarket evaprator if any???

Please help me on this one.

Hugo,
The evaporator is where the refrigerant evaporates, drawing heat out of
the air stream flowing over the outside. The only thing that can go wrong
with them is if they develop leaks, which is relatively rare. If you have it
out of the car I suppose you could take it to an A/C shop and have them leak
test it.
It’s hard to leak test it in the car because it is hard to get a sniffer close
enough.
If it is bad, I would think the best idea would be to find one in a junk yard.
