[xj-s] 1990 XJS Coupe - R/H power window doesn't work, help!

Hi,
I need R/H power window motor for my 1990 XJS Le Mans Coupe. Does
anyone have one in good working order for sale? It would be great.
The part number is JLM 10542. Thanks in advance!–

Peter,

Are you sure that it is the motor and not the switch?

Many of us have had excellent luck getting inoperative windows

working again by removing the window switches, cleaning the contacts,
and reinstalling the same switches.

Before going through the effort and expense of replacing the

window motor I recommend that you verify for certain that it is not a
switch problem.

Yes, I have to second (third?) that motion. The switches
seem to be the culprits more often. Surprising, since
they’re not getting rained on.–

I’ve had good luck getting the window switches out by removing the tray
from inside the console arm rest and then pushing up on the switch from
behind to remove it from the console. My console wood is in good shape
and I removed it this way to avoid damaging the wood when trying to pull
the switch out with a tool from the top or damaging the plastic switch.

The right motor wires are Red/Green and Green/Red.

Many thanks for your advices. I have already replaced the switch.
Unfortunately without any results. Then, I did remove the door
lining: All contacts were dry and okay. I did knock repeatedly
against the motor. Subsequently the window did work several times.
Now, it’s dead again. So I think it must be the motor.–

Hi Peter,

From your description, the motor is probably OK and just needs cleaning
or adjustment, or at the worst, new brushes. I would suggest removing
the entire regulator, then removing the motor from the regulator, and
adjusting the screw on the end of the armature (bottom of the motor)
that controls armature end-play.

Then try running the motor in each direction. Direction of motor
rotation is changed by reversing polarity of battery to the red & green
motor wires. If that doesn’t work, take the case off the motor and
check the brushes and commutator, and clean everything, lubing the
bearings/bushings.

The following is the removal procedure on my 89, which should be the
same on your 90 model:
Remove Door Trim Pad
Lower Window (if possible–NOT mandatory)
Remove inner door handle securing screws (3)
Disconnect motor electrical connectors
Remove 4 bolts securing motor & regulator to the mounting plate; top
two hold bracket with fwd hole
for arm rest bolt
Slide motor to rear and disengage lift lever from glass channel
Raise glass & tape in up position with duct tape
Remove 6 screws around perimeter of mounting plate & bolt with spacer
in center of plate
Remove motor & regulator
Motor case may be removed: 2 20T screws
Note position of case as reversal of case & magnets polarity will
reverse motor direction Up/Down
Waterproof plastic sheet is between motor/regulator & mounting plate
Align holes in plastic sheet with regulator mounting bolt holes when
re-installing

1A contacts controlling a several-amp inductive load. Whattaya
expect?

That’s why relays are a good idea for the windows.

Hi George,
Many thanks for your detailed description. I’ll try to fix the
problem following your advice first. I also did receive a very
reasonable offer for a replacement unit. So if I don’t succeed to
fix the original unit I’ll be able to change it in a single pass.
I’ll report on the result.–
