[xj-s] 1990 XJS radio code procedure

My radio lights up, with the display showing the word ‘code’ and
the security light flashing. I have what is supposed to be the
correct code. I have been guessing at the entry procedure with no
luck. What, exactly, is the procedure to enter it?–

Just punch in the 4 numbers, that’s all. If it doesn’t work, you’ve
got the wrong code or some other problem. On Mon, Oct 26, 2009 at 10:11 AM, Midlander jproszell@hotmail.com wrote:

That’s what I was afraid of - I have a 5-digit code. And the unit
beeps at what seems to be random points when I enter and then re-
enter the code.

I’ve searched through the forum and there seem to be lots of
threads on radio codes. I have yet to find an answer that fits my
radio.–

It would be helpful to know what radio you have. The cars originally
came with a glovebox-sized binder which contained the ~200-page Drivers
Handbook and additional fliers on items such as the radio. If you
don’t have that, perhaps you can post a photo of your radio and someone
with your model can provide specific information.

For example, my 89 has the AJ8700 radio, which uses a 5-digit code.
When there has been a power interruption to the radio memory/code wire,
such as by disconnecting the battery, “CODE” appears on the radio
display. You must enter the 5-digit code by slowly pressing one of the
buttons on the top row, which have number labels as well as another
function label. On my model, if ANY beep occurs during code entry, the
radio did NOT recognize that last number entry as a correct element of
the code, and you MUST start over with entry of the first number.
Allow ~ one second between button presses, and fully depress each
button.

If you get a beep during code entry (incorrect entry) in three or more
attempts, the radio will “lock you out” and not accept any code entry
until the radio has been left on (key on) for ~ 1 hour. That may be
your current situation, so allow the radio to be on with the key on for
an hour, and then try to enter the code per the above.

Sometimes one of the buttons may not make proper contact, so make a not
of when any beep occurs during the entry process. If your code were
12345, and it beeped after you pressed 3, that suggest it did NOT
properly receive the preceding press of the 2 key and is accepting 3 as
the second (incorrect) digit.

Thanks, George. I’ve turned the key/radio on and will try again in
an hour. If that doesn’t work I’ll figure out how to post a picture
of the radio so I can at least find out what model it is.

It seems to accept the first 4 numbers, then beeps the instant I
touch the button for the 5th digit.–

Thanks, George!

I left the key and radio on for an hour and entered the 5 digits.
Didn’t work the first time, then I remembered you said to wait a
second between entering each number - presto!

So … there are 4-number codes as well as 5-number codes. Seems
most people have 4-number codes.

Thanks again.–

Ok, I just unlocked mine the other day. I just got the car ('92
XJRS - with 6000 miles on it! NO misprint) and the radio
said ‘‘CODE’’. I have the kosher Jaguar booklet in the glovie, which
states the code number (4 digits). upon first trying to enter -
nothing happened. then I read the booklet (doh!) and it
states, ''the radio must be left ‘‘on’’ for 1 hour before attempting
to enter CODE if nothing happens initially. So I left it powered up
and ‘‘on’’ (display lit) for 61 minutes and then re-entered the code -
no beeps - back in business now.

Midlander,
I don’t see that anyone has mentioned something very simple.
Call your local Jaguar Dealer, or any of them really. Ask for the
parts house. They can look up your VIN number and give you the code
specific to your vehicle. Over the phone is difficult as they
typically insist on PROOF of ownership. They usually want to see
the title or vehicle registration with VIN and your name.
Then you can follow ANY of the procedures in your list of answers.
I do know this…if you have the correct code, after the last
digit is entered is automatically starts playing whatever station
is happened to be left on. Or static. There isn’t an ENTER key or
anything.
Annnnnnnnd, if the wrong code is entered incorrectly, after too
many attempts, the radio LOCKS and you might as well just replace
it. None of the procedures on this forum have worked to unlock my
radio no matter how many attempts, or procedures I followed.
SO DON’T ENTER ANY MORE until you are positive you have the correct
CODE!!

Good Luck–

Dear 2ndJaguar-
Not 100% sure that the VIN will get you the needed code.
My dealer told me on my '91 that they needed the s/n off the radio to produce the code.
Fortunately, I found the code printed inside the owner’s manual.

Have you contacted the local Dealership? Hopefully they won’t
charge you $60 for the code, as they did for a freind of mine who
needed one for a Mitsubishi.–

I know this is an OLD thread, but I had the same radio code problem. Finally, I drove my '88 XJS for over an hour, punched in the code and it worked! Stupidly, I pried out the tape in the cassette deck thinking it was a stuck tape. Now I have to leave a tape partially inserted for the radio to work, and the cassette deck is broken. If I had just waited and followed these instructions to wait an hour and insert code, I could have saved the tape deck!
