[xj-s] 1993 xj-s conv 6 cyl runs for 20min+ then fuel starves

I have a 93 xj-s conv 75,xxx miles. Never had a problem, untill
this year. Runs for an hour or so then goes into fuel starvation,
only the two rear fuel injectors seem to keep the car running. When
I have it towed home,it is picked up at the front end so there is a
steep angle. Once I get it home and it sits, it will start right up
and run fine. When it does this if have loosened the fuel filted by
the rear wheel and there is plenty of pressure on BOTH SIDES. I
figure dirt in the tank clogging the filter(looks like a small
metal mesh bag. The tank is so clean, inspecting through the fuel
sender opening, I could eat inside of the tank.I ran the tank fuel
to just about nothing.Do the bosch fuel relay on the right rear
wheel well go bad(a silver metal one) can they over heat and shut
down ?. Should I by pass it and ground the wire to the frame.

Any ideas would be great

THank you

It possible that there is problem in the tank venting (It runs to
and through the carbon canister. Try this, when it stalls, remove
the gas cap and see if it starts.–

Tried that, no air goes in or out when I release the cap.

Thank you

Have you cleaned the tank filter and changed the fuel filter??
It wouldn’t hurt to swap the fuel pump relay as they are relatively
inexpensive, at least to rule it out after the filters are done. .

Mike,
I was away from home by 2000 miles and this happened to a newly
purchased '92 XJS convertible I fell in love with. I took it to a
Europwean car machanic that fleeced me out of several thousand
dollars. He checked and changed every possible part.

I finally told him to take the tank out and check the internal
filters. The pump, a Walbro, had a small 1/4’’ inlet with a screen.
The screen was full of crap that got through the 700 and 40 micron
filter in the tank before the fuel pump. When you stop enough crap
floats off the Walbro, or whatever pump you have, to give you
another chance at a false hope.

Advice:
Remove the pump and carve out the inlet filter. The inline filter
is clean as a whistle because it is plugging the pump inlet. Give
the inline filter something to do. Gut the pump filter. It has 2
prefilters.

Regards,
Noel

Been here, done that!
Forget the relays and remove the tank and pump assembly.–

Yes, they do! In fact, Jaguar had some trouble with bad relays along
in there somewhere.

ground the wire to the frame.

No, you should try a new relay.

For what it’s worth, when I go to fill my tank (95 AJ16) there is
always a hiss of air as I open the filler cap. I have no problems
with fuel starvation even running it down so I get over 16 gals in
on a fill.–

If the car was an earlier V12, I’d suggest you make some changes. I
dunno if the AJ16 system is any different, but when the engine is
running there should be zero pressure or vacuum in the tank on the
mid-80’s V12 cars. It can (and should) build up a bit of pressure or
vacuum when not running. Whether or not it can build a noticeable
pressure or vacuum in the time it takes to get out of the car and
walk to the back and open the filler cap, I dunno.

Stalling isn’t the only problem with excessive pressure or vacuum in
the tank. It can also result in stresses on the tank, leading to
cracking later on.

BTW, my '83 held something like 21 gallons, so if you’re refilling
only 16 gallons either you have a smaller tank or you’re not running
it down very far.
