[xj-s] 85 XJS Aux radiator fan

My fan runs at all times when key is in run position. Fan will run
on then shut off after hot shutdown. Where is the senser and relay
located that I need to check? Could a diode be involved and how do
I locate it? Is the A/C involved?

Leroy, on your car there IS a tie-in between the electric fan and the a/c
compressor. The fan will run whenever the compressor clutch is engaged,
regardless of engine temp. And…the compressor is engaged in all climate
control modes…even if heat is called up on the selector dial.

So… before going any further…turn the climate control “off” and see if
the fan stops.

Mr Dwyer, The fan does not seem to react to the climate

control setting-on or off- it continues to run. The 3 wire plug is
disconnected at the A/C clutch still the fan runs. I did find 3
relays/ under a cover front left crnr. eng. bay. But no clue as to
what they are for. Yes I do have Kirbys CD but find it VERY
difficult to use with Win XP.
And it is a great comfort to know that you and several others
dedicated to us Jag DIY,s can be relied upon- THANKS–

One of the relays up there is for the aux fan. Others are for the lights.
Follow some wires to figure out which one is for the fan. Yours is different
whether the relay is stuck or it’s the signal to the relay coil that’s
always high.

Yes I do have Kirbys CD but find it VERY
difficult to use with Win XP.

The download Book worked very well for me when I used XP. I don’t know
anything about a CD version, but don’t see why it should be any different.
Tell me a little more about the CD and problem you’re having with it and
I’ll try to make some suggestions. For example, is it a Microsoft Word file
called Xjs_help.doc? If so, do you have Word or something else on your
machine that will open a .doc file?

I have created my own .pdf file of Kirby’s latest masterpiece.
I am glad to send it if that will help. Opens way faster than
the word doc and is still fully searchable.–

Mr Sowell, Using ''D'' drive to read directly from disc was

unsatisfactory but copy to ms office word 97 allowed easy access to
all info and all the info- color and location of components- I need
to troubleshoot. Will start with diode pack.
The car is taking me on a 1500 mi. jaunt to Helena Mt. and
back soon. Dodging animals in Mt. is a very exciting sport. I dont
know of any other machine that can do 4 90 deg. crnrs in 2 seconds
at speed. Screaming pirellis (sp) add a lot to the fun !!!
Thank you and Doug and others for support,

I would copy the file from the CD to your hard drive. It will be easier than
fussing with the CD all the time and will open much faster.

Will start with diode pack.

Hope it solves the problem.

Problem solved. Shorted diode in the little blue box on lft

fender. I think it is in the A/C circuit which is inop. at the time
so can take time to replace with another with higher ratings.
Thank you all, Leroyr
Now on to intermittent tach.–

Good sleuthing! Don’t think a higher rating is necessary. There is a diode
in my car that plays the same role, even though it’s in a different place. I
replaced it with the OE Jaguar part about 10 years ago and it’s still OK.
