[xj-s] '89 XJS Power Window motor replacement

My left side window motor crapped out. It is the Delco
series with a ten-tooth gear. The ‘‘new and improved’’ fix
calls for a Bosch motor with an 8 tooth gear, and…wait for
it, you have to buy the entire regulator assembly, power
adapter, etc. That package is over $400.00, while I can get
the Bosch motor for about $80.00. Question: It appears
that the mounting holes for the Bosch and the Delco are
identical, so why can’t I just pull the pressed-on gear off
the Bosch and replace it with the gear off of the old Delco
motor? Considering the amount of water that finds its way
into the inner reaches of the doors on the XJS, someone’s
had to have had this issue before, and hopefully has some
experience with a cheaper repair, such as I was thinking.–

I can’t answer your question about switching drive gears, but my 89
originally had the Bosch (smaller) motor and my 85 has the larger,
round Delco with 10-tooth gear. It may be that the same gear will
drive the regulator, and the gear tooth number is just for
ratio/leverage purposes.

If you haven’t taken the motor, believed to be bad, apart, adjusted the
screw on the end of the armature for end play, cleaned, lubed, and
inspected the brushes, you may be able to fix the motor in about an
hour. I’ve had several quit on me, but always been able to get them
going again.

Let me know if you need specific instructions on disassembly, etc.

In reply to a message from KBF sent Tue 21 Jun 2011:

I ran into that problem once. I just put in a complete used motor
and regulator from a 1985, and it worked fine.

Dave might have one.

Good luck,
