[xj-s] '95 4.0 no start and windscreen

Hi all,

It’s been awhile, but I’m still alive and kicking.
I’ll fly back to NL to collect my XJS and rive that back to
the South of France. The problem is the following: when I
picked it up from the US I drove it from OH to NJ without a
problem (save for a ‘‘lack of fuel’’ incident). The car was
driven into the container and shipped to NL. When I wanted
to start it to rive it onto the trailer on this sie of the
Pond it wouldn’t start. I trailered it to the painter an all
that but never got to sorting the problem. Now I have just
one day…
Any idea where to start? How do you check for spark on an
AJ16 engine?
Another question is this: the windscreen is cracked. I
bought a brand new one real cheap which was advertised as
being for a Coupe. Will this fit? The part numbers are
different but I hope they are in fact the same.

cheers,–
Arnoud

To the best of my knowledge the coupe glass will not fit. I
have been trying to get a coupe windshield for a while now
with no luck. let me know if you want to get rid of the thing.–

Put an OBDII scanner on it if you can Arnoud. Likely culprit would
be muck on the crank position sensor at the front, or cracked
leads. It’s handy to have as a spare anyhow. You can check for
spark in the usual way but with coil-on-plug you have to remove a
complete coil assembly, not jsut a plug wire put onto a spare plug.
You can check for primary voltage at the coil wires under the
protective cover - possibly with a test lamp as well as a meter.
Have a look in the X300 e-book or ask on the X300 forum as they
know that engine inside out.

Glad I didn’t buy it off you now! (Only kidding)

Maybe you need to swap it for my super-reliable X305

Forgot what is is called, but there is a switch that cuts off the
fuel pump in the event of a collison. On my cars, it is located on
the right (passenger) side under a black plastic cover. It’s
possible that the shipping container received a sufficient shock to
trigger it.–

Hi Pete,

hmm, tempting offer that…not;) If I keep it I’ll S/C it,
but that engine and gearbox are still in NL as well…oh,
the joy of having many car parts in two locations 800 miles
apart…
I was thinking fuel supply; thanks for the tip Maynard; I’ll
look at that switch before I start removing the pump;)
If it doesn’t fit I’ll let the screen go; shipping from
europe will be a bit troublesome maybe?–

well, the problem is fuel since I do have spark but dry
spark plugs. Since on these cars the pump is immersed in the
tank and there’s a great big steel rigidity panel in front
of it it took some time to get to the actual pump
connection. I hotwired it and nothing happened…I even
removed the sender tap the pump, but alas…not happy with
that; XJS tanks are hard enough to remove as it is and this
convertible is even worse. I’ll give it a go but if I don’t
succeed by tonight I’ll abandon the project for now (have to
be back in France by Thursday).–

I hotwired the pump properly this time, an it now runs. The
engine tries to catch, but doesn’t. Only two time was I able
to let it run, but hen just for a few seconds. I cleaned the
crank sensor. I do have spark and judging from the backfire
and subsequent small fire in the AFM I take it I have fuel
too, but not when I want it.
Any thoughts? I’ll try the X300 list as well.–
