[xj-s] 95 XJS brakes

The first time that I press the brake pedal - it depresses
further than it should. When I hit the brake immediately
afterwards - the brakes work fine. I bled the brakes and
that did not help. Any ideas?–

Probably the master cylinder, these will normally pump up if the
leak is only slight.–

If you have warped rotors, or a bit too much run out on your front
wheel bearings, as you drive the wobble will send the pistons and
pads into the calipers, and so the first time you hit the pedal, it
has to make up that distance…

Thanks - any possibility it could be the booster?–

If the rotors were warped - I would probably feel a pulsing.

Not necessarily. If the THICKNESS of the rotor varies, you get a
pulsing. If the rotor is merely warped but remains the same
thickness all around, you might not actually feel it – but it’d back
the pads up for sure.

an you
explain a little further about the wheel bearing?

Same effect as the warped rotor, actually. If the wheel bearings are
loose, the rotor wobbles, backing up the pads. Easy to fix, just
adjust the wheel bearings. If that’s your problem, you should see an
immediate improvement.

Isn’t bleeding of an ABS equipped car somewhat different
compared to an older car? The '95 uses an X300 style
brake/ABS system. Did you check their archive for a solution?

I chased this for along time on a Volvo I own, first
application very long pedal travel and one immediately
afterwards nice and firm.
In my case, it turned out to be a caliper sticking on it’s
slide pins, so perhaps one of the pistons on your calipers
is stuck.–

On my 1994 it has the Teves III ABS system with the
accumulator ball under the bonnet; it does indeed have a
different bleed technique for the rear brakes. I believe,
and only about half sure, that the '95 has the Teves IV ABS
system that doesn’t require the same technique and you can
bleed normally. Easy way to check is to look under the
bonnet to see if there is a black sphere near the firewall on
the right side.–

My 95 has a Teves III. Some 95’s have the IV, and all 96’s
have IV–
