[xj-s] AC air flow problem

I just put a new compressor in the recently acquired 89 XJS and while it blows cold, I’m
getting only a partial air flow through the vents. You can hear the air blowing and I
suspect that there is a vent door of some sort stuck. Any suggestions as to where to start
on this. I am hoping that this is a standard problem that there is a standard solution to.

Brian,

I had the same problem when I bought my '89 a couple
of years ago. Got the A/C working, but not getting
any air out of the center vents even though it sounded
like it was blowing hard. Thought it was the vent
doors, etc., just like you. That was not it.

I discovered that there are actually TWO blower units
on these cars, one on each side. If one is not
working, you get our symptom – lots of noise but no
air. The one on the driver’s side was not working on
mine. Pulled it out and it turned out that the unit
was toast. Ended up tracking down a replacement unit
(expensive), put it in, and the car cools off
beautifully now.

Don’t waste your time trying to adjust the vents.
Check to be sure both units are working. I suspect
one of yours in not. Hopefully, it’s just a fuse. If
yours is toast too, contact me off-list and I’ll tell
you my experience finding a replacement unit.

Regards,
Steve Weinstein
