just noticed a leak at the pulley on the ac compressor, r12,
bottom of pulley is wet with green oily fluid. this was
easier to see, as I have the compressor moved forward for
injector hose, spark plug, etc. replacement. looks like ac
work is in my future.
I would like to know how soon in the future is this going
to need work? I checked the shraeder valve and there is
pressure in the sys, once that pulley starts leaking does is
just go or does this slow leak last for a while? should I
disconnect the clutch so not to damage any other part of the
sys or is this even possible.
thanks for any help, Ken–

Hi,
The front seal is probably the worst leak during the winter that
will happen. The seal needs to be run about monthly or the seal
will lose the freon. If pressure remains, run the car for a while
to excercise the seal and recharge. Leak will probably go away
unless the car has a jillion miles on it.

One thing that many people don’t realize is the the earlier
compressors, such as the A6 were designed to let a very
small amount of refrigerant (with oil) out through the seal
when the clutch engages. This was meant to keep the seal
lubricated.
What you may be seeing may just be normal. Monitor the
performance and don’t worry until you have a significant
drop in cooling. Even then, you may just have to add a can
of refrigerant rather than replacing the compressor.–
