[xj-s] air bypass screw

Could anyone tell me where the air bypass screw is located, I have
the JDHL manuals and it does not locate it for me or I’m not
looking in the right place. Thanks–

Could you perhaps indicate what “air bypass screw” you’re talking of (at
least what you believe its purpose to be)?

If you mean the “idle adjustment screw” (which is really a bolt) - then, if
you have a LHD model, open the bonnet, look down at the brake reservoir,
then past that down to the engine, below the air cleaner level, towards the
firewall (or, just feel to the inside rear of the air cleaner and follow
the rubber hose to the housing it connects to, and you’ll be in the
vicinity). It threads out at a parallel to the ground, and perpendicular
to the centreline of the drivetrain.

Otherwise, you’ll need to be a bit more particular about what assembly
you’re talking about.

Sorry, I meant to be more specific, this a 1996 XJS 4.0L and I need
to adjust the idle on cold start and also after it warms up, the
manual indicates adjusting the air bypass screw but does not show
its location but its suppose to be a 7/32 allen screw.–

Eddy, I believe the manual is incorrect. The screw is actually a
slotted screw in a recess of the throttle body, just below and
rearward of the idle speed actuator.–

Bob, thanks, but I have looked this throttle body over from front
to back (cant see underneath)and do not see a slotted screw of
anykind, any other suggestions ( I could be not looking in the
right place)Thanks for the help–

Eddy, look straight down past the rear of the idle speed actuator,
and you’ll see a boss in the throttle body casting with an approx.
quarter inch hole in it. It’s immediately adjacent to the #4 intake
manifold runner. The screw is in this hole in the boss. You may
have to blow it out with some compressed air to clear out any
obstructing junk.

These info applies to my 95 4.0L, but I have no reason to believe
the 96 is any different.–

Thanks Bob, I believe I located it, its under the fuel rail cover
and almost obscured from sight very deceiving where its located.
Thanks again.–

Eddy, hope you’re not mistaking the EGR solenoid for the idle
bypass solenoid. The latter is the smaller of the two black round
devices mounted on the throttle body. The EGR solenoid is close to
the fuel rail cover, while the idle bypass solenoid (which is the
point of reference I described for located the air bypass screw) is
closer to the air intake bellows.–

You were right Bob, there was a quarter inch hole adjacent to the
egr solenoid and there is nothing in it, I went back to look again
and I still do not see anything that resembles waht you have
described to me, I have gone so far as to remove some of the hoses
that were obstructing view and still can not locate it. thanks for
your help. Anyway I can send you pictures of the throttle body so
you can see what I see?–
