Does anyone here know if the AJ6 transmission bolt pattern
is the same as a 5.3 V12 transmission bolt pattern?–

The rear face of block detail is completely different between V12
and AJ6/AJ16 engines.

If you wanted to bolt a transmission that was intended to fit to an
AJ6/AJ16 to a V12 instead, such as the manual Getrag 290 gearbox,
then you will need a custom made adaptor plate. there are several
companies that make them.

However, if for some reason you wanted to fit the GM Hydramatic
4l80E automatic gearbox, fitted to late model V12s, you would be in
luck. The same gearbox was fitted to supercharged versions of the
AJ16 engine, so the necessary adaptor plate is available.–

Great! Thank you! I actually was thinking about it both
ways. I am still debating picking up a car (grey market)
3.6 with the 5 speed and putting the 5 speed behind one of
hte v12s and moving the turbo 400 to the aj6.

Any good sources for the conversion plates? Would John’s
cars be one of them?

Thanks!–

The 3.6 will have a 265 Getrag. Unlike the later 290, this has a detachable bell housing. By fitting a small adapter ring you can bolt the 265 to a V12 manual bell, although since they are rare you might as well buy a bell designed to take the 265 in the first place. Not sure who sells those.

Meanwhile, the adapter plate on a 3.6 is different to that on an AJ16 since the latter is ‘wet’ and holds the rear crank seal. The XJR plate therefore wouldn’t let you fit a 4L80E to the back of your 3.6. Or at least not without cutting out the central seal section, and even then I’m not 100% sure though I think the block holes do still match.
