[xj-s] Auxilary air valve

My aav has given up on my 1987 xjs. I have found two
valves that look identical however one is half price of
the other one. The original part # is EBC1198. That is the
expensive one. The other part # is EAC4438. Does anyone
know if there is any difference between the two valves? Is
it a situation of you get what you pay for?–

Not exactly. Please see here:

Verbatim from my previous post:

…there are at least 3 different part numbers
for the AAV. The one for the 6.0L is EBC1198 not EBC3819.
If you check other vendor’s, they offer EAC2273, which is
much cheaper (still pricey though).
I’ve asked many times on here what are the differences,
besides what Kirby mentioned here:

http://www.jag-lovers.org/xj-s/book/AAVdifferences.html

Have not gotten a good answer.

Thanks Steve. I know what you mean. If there are only
subtle differences the EAC 4438 would probably be ok. I’m
tempted to completely block it off and reroute vacuum line
to one of the spare ports at the back of A bank intake
manifold to provide cooling to the distributor. Not sure
where idle would end up but only one way to find out–

I’ve tried blocking completely the AAV port. Fully warmed
engine will barely idle at ca. 300 rpm if there are no
vacuum leaks.
The dizzy vent line during the test was open and one could
hear the engine trying to breath through this little hole.

Based on the above, I’d guess that to set your idle at ca.
700-750 rpm, you’ll have to create a fairly good ‘vacuum
leak’

BTW, did you know that an AAV can be refurbished for $100?

Ok. I guess I won’t try a complete block. I do have a
spare aav from my parts car that I could try and rebuild.
I have researched the different techniques and it seems
simple enough. Sourcing the correct components will be the
tricky part. Thank-you for the replies–

You can get an acceptable idle from stuffing a champagne
cork (trimmed a bit 9 course to let air past). Not
perfect but way cheaper and more satisfying, too  . I
run my car in good weather only (> 50F) and it really
doesn’t take THAT long for the engine to settle in. AAV
needs idle adjustment of course and may need touching up
for the first 100 miles or so. Been running my car this
way for over 12 years.

invention. I received a link from another jag lover to a
guy that rebuilds your old aav for 100$. Now I will have
to determine whether to buy a very good bottle of
champagne or a very cheap one haha.–

Perhaps just ship the capsule? Everything else about the rebuild is easy
enough once you have a capsule to work with.

I don’t know who quoted $200, was not me as that is
prohibitive, even including a new thermal Motor installed
and calibrated. The E-bay service is a re-builder from what
I can tell not replacing the original bulb, rather squeezing
it and what ever. He’s been there for some time, my service
is better…IMHO

The units I send out are like new, including the new Thermal
Motors and calibrated to factory specs.

I Would not send just the bulb as disassembly and reassembly
are not for the average guy. Testing, etc, etc, take time,
what is that worth? versus and a new unit NOS at $400

I will make very effort to get the unit to Farmcat in
Montana as soon as I have an address. Best, JW–

Installed new spark plugs, and the right bank plugs were
all badly carboned up and the left ones like new when
removed. runs better, but now I am suspicious of the ecu
and or o2 sensor.(where is it?) also found the switch near
top of throttle pivot was broken, what is that switch for,
it has another one on right of pedestal that sits a little
lower…could that have anything to do with it. Don’t want
to drive it much til I get some more input cause I don’t
want to have to do the plugs again for some time (I hope),–

Hope you enjoyed changing the plugs! The two O2 sensors are
located in both downpipes right below both exhaust manifolds. You
could try swapping them side to side and see if your problem goes
from one bank to the other. Wouldn’t cost anything! I think the
first switch enriches the fuel near WOT, and the second is your
transmission kickdown. Anything to do with it? No.
Dave. Keep us posted if you have any luck.
BTW I’m not sure if you meant to post on this thread or not…–
