[xj-s] black sludge in tranny pan

After dropping the tranny on my 1984 XJS pan to see why I was
having a whining sound coming from the tranny the bottom of the pan
had a layer of black sludge on on side of the pan.
The tranny oil was a good color I does not look like the filter had
been changed for a long time even though I had paid to have this
done several years ago.
I have been in the process of restoring this car for the last
several years basically it has only senn maybe 100 miles in the 5
years.
Gentleman do I have a big problem what do you think George, George
I had no problem following your directions did not have to remove
the intermediate exhaust pipes.

I would really appreciate input, after I saw the black sludge I
stopped what I was doing went into the house and poured myself a
large tequila.

Needless to say the more I thought about the black sludge the more
needed another tequila.
Now I have a headache what I can say is that it does not seem as
though the black sludge is metallic checked it with a magnet when
you touch the sludge it is very fine between the fingers almost
like a fine powder.

I don’t want to continue until I hear from the experts.

Thank you in advance.

Brian-
I am guessing that the material you are seeing is clutch face material that has come off over the years. There are several clutch packs in your trans each consisting of several clutch disks. When the clutch-pack-piston compresses the clutch pack, the clutch plates engage against steel disks that are splined to the trans output shaft.

The whining is most likely the front pump of the trans either restricted from not enough flow, or perhaps it’s gears are already damaged leading to the whine.

Install a new filter, new fluid, and have a reputable trans shop measure the line pressure, There are taps to hookup pressure gauges on the trans and with the rear wheels lifted, the pressure can be monitored during all phases of trans operation.

Now that being said, here’s something that may make you feel better:
Reverse gear takes the most pressure to operate. If your reverse gear engages quickly at idle, then the pump is probably putting out sufficient pressure.

Hope this helps! Jim Kocmoud / 86 XJ-S / Chicago----- Original Message ----

Hi guys,

I will second this advise, It seems to be little known that reverse
exerts the most pressure. I occasionally get a car with the black
sludge - filter change and new oil and she set to go again.

unfortunately I don’t always have the cars history to hand (it is
not something they normally put in the service book) so can’t tell
if its been going on for an age or not.

Change the oil and filter and see if it’s ok in 160km

Hi Brian:

The good news is that you don’t have any metal shards on the pan magnet, and you have an explanation for the whine (pump cavitation from a gummed-up filter).

I would suggest changing the filter and putting a drain plug in the pan so you can drain the fluid without removing the pan (so you can drain & refill again once or twice in the next several weeks to get most all the old fluid out without having to flush). Without flushing, about half the total system fluid remains, within the torque convertor and the cooler, when you drain the pan.

With any luck at all, you will find the whine is gone, and the transmission shifts much more smoothly and predictably than before.

Gentlemen: thank you for the advice I feel a lot better now, Need
to stay away from that tequila for alittle while.
I will run down to my local auto supply dealer and purchase a drain
plug and install on monday.
why are jags like swiss watches easy to take apart but a devil to
put back again.
But what pleasure it is to hear the V12 tick over and not feel any
vibration.
George thank you.
I will as always keep the forum involved as to my progress with the
transmission.

As a side note I should be finished by the end of september with my
CAD work detailing in 3d different views of the vacuum hose layouts
along with the assorted fittings.
This will be made free to all on the forum.

Thank you

I agree with all of the above. Especially the drain plug and the
pump is cavitating with a partially plugged filter. Simply service
the tranny and drain it a few times, at intervals.

The CAD drawing will be interesting.–

PS
I serviced a Buick once and found paper parts of clutch facings in
the pan. Closed it up and drove it for another year, sold it cheap
to a friend with full disclosure of the XM. He drove it for several
years and gave it to his son to go to college. He drove it and sold
it!
Tuf’N’Nuff? I was impressed.
