[xj-s] Boot/trunk problem

First, It is a 1992 XJS, Coupe. When I tried to open boot, I heard a loud ‘snapping’ sound and now boot push lever will not open boot. There appears to be no way to take anything other than the license plate light assemblies off to get boot open to repair push lever. Which I did - but to no avail. Key, of course, just locks or unlocks, the push lever opens boot. Is it possible to enter boot from behind seat? Or does someone out there know a way in? Luckily, I just put in a new battery.

Skip,

There is a way to do it but I don’t remember how. It’s NOT through the
passenger compartment. May involve drilling a hole behind license plate.

Do you know how to search the Archives?

When I changed my license plate I found that my boot lid had been
drilled by a PO, as you mention. It came in handy later, when the
lock broke, as it was the only way to get into the boot to fix the
lock!!

My PO drilled several holes to find the right spot. Once you find
it, all it takes is a screwdriver to pop it open.–

Drill in the center line of the plate/tag area. It looks like it
might be to the left…trust me it’s not. Don’t ask How I know.
