[xj-s] brake problem - pulling to the sides - update

Hi all,

I recently posted a short story about a peculiar problem I seem to
experience sometimes when braking - the steering wheel will pull to one
side - OR the other!

The update to this is that I realise now that the steering wheel will
pull to whatever side the road is tilting! And we are talking very
slight tilting here, like the difference between the right lane and left
lane on the road! And one other thing is that it doesn’t just occur when
I brake, but the car will also drag ever so slowly to one or the other
side.

Now I am not a very experienced driver or car owner, but I do know that
I have never had this problem with any other car I have driven.

So what are we looking at here, a bearing problem? When I had the car on
a lift some months ago, I noticed that I could grab the top and bottom
of either front wheel and there was a very slight freeplay - and I am
suspecting this as being the source of my trouble… A mechanic told me
at the time that there was supposed to be some, but maybe not as much as
I experienced.

Any ideas anyone?

Excessive wheel bearing play can sometimes be picked up by the brake pads.
Two things tend to happen, the first is that if the wheel/brake disc is
‘laying over’ it could rub against the brake pad/s causing the brakes to
drag, secondly after driving a short distance the first application of the
brake pedal can show excessive travel caused by the aforementioned disc
pushing the pads/pistons back into the calliper, hence the first application
pushes the pistons/pads back into the correct position, subsequent
applications result in less travel, this is known as pad ‘knock off’.

Just my two bob’s worth

kind regards
