[xj-s] Broken plug ceramic in the combustion chamber

In reply to a message from cadjag sent Wed 7 Aug 2013:

We didn’t even have AC in school when I was a kid. Nobody
in my neighborhood had it in their cars either…that was
for rich folk.

Of course, we didn’t have interstates then and Al hadn’t
heard of global warming yet.

I do save the plugs, Carl, but I also have to spend a
certain amount to get an emissions waiver…so I change
them for the receipt, and even breaking a few I have a lot
of spares on hand.

I’m sorry, what was the thread about? Oh yeah, is ceramic
bad for an engine…–

I grew up in West Texas. No AC then. Swamp coolers here and there.
We managed. Would I do it now, No way!!

Currently in Austin also, but no way would I put the top down -
that would be like holding a hot air blower to your face and body!–

Sorry Ed, I’ve been away for a few days with no internet, so
peaceful and productive

Regarding the rubber on the inside of the spark plug socket:

Yes you are probably correct. I went through my sockets and
pulled out 3 plug sockets, two of which had the rubber
missing, which can explain some of my issues.

I thank you for the insight

cheers–

But here’s another thought. My plug socket has a rubber insert that fits
over the plug porcelain. Does yours? It acts as a guide. Another thing it
does is hold on to the plug so it’s lifted out by the socket. Downside is

John:

In my early years, no cars had AC, even the rich folks!! In my HS
junior year, 1946, the rich kids would come from time to time with
Dad’s new ride. Pontiac, Nash, and even a Lincoln. No AC!! From
time to time, I got the family 38 Dodge. No AC there!!! And, mostly
my 23 T. Naturally cooled, no top atall!! Heck, no windows either!!
It still had the ‘‘T’’ ration decal on the was. It started life as a
truck!!

Much later, in 57, I was promoted to Br Mgr in the CA Imperial
valley. 120F’s not unheard of!! But, AC everywhere. My co issued
bare bones 57 six cylinder Chevrolet had a Mark IV after market AC.
Just barely adequate, but beat none all to pieces. The 59 Ford that
replaced it with factory AC was so much better!!

I recall working in the co’s LA office. Ho kept saying the temps at
LA did not merit AC cars!!! They were reading LAX numbers, far
different than inland or in the San Fernando valley. Then, a HO guy
came out to audit. Twas summer, so one of us took him out to the
valley to let him see the size of one guy’s territory and the fun
of navigating it. NON AC co car of course!! Not long after, AC in
the replacement cars was OK’d.

In about 55, my territory included west Texas and SE New Mexico. No
AC in my co car. I adopted the habit of driving between town in
daytime in my underwear. Then just before entering a town where I
had a call, put on my pants and shirt. Thusly, avoiding a stinky
sweaty appearance.

In about 1965, I made the mistake of crossing from Blythe in CA to
quartzite in AZ in a summer day in a non AC’d Corvair. Brutal. I
knew better, it should have been at night with all the other non
dumb folks!!

So far, locally, we are getting away with a relatively cool summer.

But, not home free yet.

Jeep is AC’d. Jaguar not as of yet.

I vote that ceramic is akin to stones and as such not good for
cylinders!!

Carl,

I would agree with you.

I was walking through our local Home Depot and they have
those ‘‘bore-scope’’ cameras for 199$ now, starting to look
like a really good idea.

Could be fun way to find do TDC thru the plug hole

cheers–
