[xj-s] convertible fuel filler gasket

Hey folks,
Can anyone confirm the fuel tank fill tube on my 89 convert
has the thick gasket sealing the fill tube and the fuel
tank neck? My boot fuel odors are isolated to filler tube
area with the sleeve ‘‘boot’’ intact.
The pre-facelift coupes have this configuration but I’ve
not found anything definitive re the convertibles.

Any hints on replacement of this gasket? I’m assuming that
after removal of the filler cap and the ‘‘boot’’ inside the
boot- remember the converts are different than the coupes-
that the tube can be pulled out from the fuel tank neck
from above.–

I believe they do.

BTW, there’s a write-up on fuel odors in the boot at my website:

In addition to my '76, there are some photos of that area on a Cabriolet. Probably a little different from the convertible though. There’s a lot of other stuff in the write-up that you might find helpful

The filler pipe is welded to tank, you can remove the filler cap
assembly from the filler pipe, it is sealed with an o-ring. There
is a boot or gaiter that covers the o-ring joint between the
filler pipe and cap so when you pull up or try to twist the filler
cap you may damage the gaiter. I had the tank out of our '89
convertible and you have to have the gaiter on the filler pipe
before you put tank back in the hole then pull it up through the
hole in the fender as you install the filler cap. At least this
is how I remember it.–

Thanks guys. Sounds like I can slide the gaiter boot down
from the inside and remove the filler cap from outside.

Ed, I’m well aware of your site. A great resource for us
all.
