[xj-s] Convertible Top

Well it’s time. My top and liner are in need of replacing. I
would appreciate any recommendations on sources for both
those items.–

My XK8 (1998) top is in as new condition after 15 years, but I am
about to replace the headliner since a mouse in my garage decided
to try to make a home in it. I had been parking the car with the
top down and the tonneau cover in place (so the mouse could do his
dirty work unseen while under it) The clue was a bunch of shredded
paper at the site of the chewed up section of headliner. I had
thought at first that the material had rotted and then caught on
some metal part of the top framework. There are lots of sources
for headliners and tops on the internet. I found a local auto
upholsterer who will do the job of making and replacing the
headliner in my car for $250.00 total.–

I have one thought or suggestion about your top headliner
issue. I would suggest in the future not to leave the top
down for long periods when not in use. One thing that can
cause a great deal of stress to convertible top material is
having top down for long periods of time putting stress or
wear on the material when the top is down and material is
folded tight.

I had not thought of this myself until I found out from a
upholstery shop how hard it is on the material to leave top
down for extended periods. This can be a common practice
with a car like a Jaguar that is often used for weekends and
limited use drives only. Good to hear that the mouse did
not damage the convertible top material.–

Perhaps a topic worth discussing among you convertible owners:
What’s the best way to leave it? Is it possible to put the top up
but not latch it to the windshield, so it’s not tight? Would that be
better than leaving it tight? Would it be best to leave the windows
down, presuming it’s indoors and there are no cats involved?

Vinyl slowly shrinks over time. The top should be fully
up and latched for storage. Tight keeps it in shape.
Loose allows it to shrink, so it gets hard, or impossible,
to latch at some point.

Bentley used to have a disclaimer in their owners manual
that said storage with the top down would void their top
warranty.–

FWIW, my 1990 XJS still has the original top and it’s pretty
stellar. It’s always up and latched. I never wash it, though
sometimes the edges get wet when I wash the body (albeit,
carefully). I leave it out/drive it around, top up, to ensure the
top dries. To clean, I vacuum it - that’s it. I don’t leave it
outside, if I can help it - bird crap is a pain to remove. I only
put it down when I want to drive it that way, but I seem to have an
aversion to leaving it down unnecessarily (I guess this is good,
having read the prior posts). I know it won’t last forever, but I’m
trying to stretch it (no pun intented!)–

David,I own a Hess as well…Can you close the roof manually at all…?? Location of the two relays I assume are in the boot above the battery ?? What are the odds of the hydra fluid in the roof pump being low ?? AND how is it accessed ?? Thank you. JEFF in Miami

I have a 92 Xjs that needed a top and I was going to have Pauls Jag do it. They lost their top installer so I thought I would try it myself. Pauls had the top in stock and sent it to me. The factory service manual goes into great detail and allowed me to install the top and it came out perfectly. I have never done anything like this but with a lot of patience, common sense, and the manual it is doable…
