Evening all,
The windows on my convertible have become noticeably out of
alignment, particularly when the conv. top is up. The front window
does not meet flush with the rear quarter on its vertical edge when
the door is closed and the top up. The top portion is out more on
the front window than the rear quarter. It looks like the windows
go up too far and then the rubber seal for the front window, also
assists in pushing the front window out and not at all flush with
the rear quarter.
-
When the front window is up, is the diagonal edge of the front
window flush with the lower triangular ‘brace’ part of that window?
-
Are the front and rear quarter windows at the same height when
up?
I think the answers to the above 2 questions will help me figure
out what needs to be changed to make them flush again.
Thanks,
David.

David,
The service manual has instructions for aligning the
windows. However it’s more important to make sure the
top is straight.
Has anything happened receintly? New top? Accident?
Trouble getting the top up or closed?
Once you are sure about the top you can remove the
interior panels and adjust the windows. They go in
all directions by moving the channels. There are
stops for the down limit and up limit and you can set
front independantly from the rear.
Clean all the old grease out first and then lube the
bearings and regulator. Clean and lube the door latch
opening and locking links too!
Hey I just thought that your guide bearings may be
loose. Check them first.

There has been no problem with the top. I don’t have a service
manual that covers the alignment, but got one on order. I had the
door cover off yesterday and greased the door lock while I was
looking at the window. However, I don’t know where the upper limit
should be set, or, what to adjust to not let the window rise as
much. I think the upward limit is my problem.
Thanks,
David.–

I have a 1995 xjs 2+2 convertible and the rear windows on both
sides are inset noticeably from both door windows when up; I have
seen many cars that way and assumed that was by design; I’m new to
Jags and this is my first one; are you all saying the front and
rear windows are supposed to be flush with each other when up like
any coupe or convertible usually is?

IIRC there are rubber caps on the upper limit screws.
If these are gone they allow the window to go too far
up. If replaced with something non original and too
thick the glass will not go up far enough.
I was wondering what has changed to allow the window
to become “out of alignment”. If the window is not
set at the correct point in/out horizontaly where it
contacts the top rubber it will seem to not go up far
enough.
Also the rear window has the rubber attached to the
leading edge where the door glass seals and must
rotate up slightly behind (0.5mm)the front glass, that
is the leading edge of the rear window seal is 0.5mm
behind the front door glass. This makes the two side
glass pieces very close to being on the same plane.
I will go measure mine in a few minutes.— Geordie Dave dfarries@austin.rr.com wrote:

Problem found. There is a nylon type washer that fits snuggly to
what looks like a rivetted nut for the upward stop. This nylon part
was broken, and when it hit as the stop, the part expanded because
of the break and allows the window to travel in the upward
direction too far. This then caused the top part of my driver side
window to protrude out and leave an obvious gap between driver
window and rear quarter.
I think I will visit the parts store tomorrow to see if I can find
a suitable rubber grommet replacement. Any other suggestions?
Thanks,
David.–

Dave,
I have posted the photos of the offset of the front to
rear side window glass. I will check some low mileage
cars this summer. Mine has 60k. Here is the link:
http://www.jag-lovers.org/v.htm?1174273514
The front must be out more than the rear to help
airflow keep the water out. The measurement at the
bottom is 4mm, middle 5mm and the top 5mm.
I think I can lessen this on my car by about 2mm by
moving the door in a bit. The photo makes the door
look as if it is out a lot. It is not.

Thanks for the detailed photos. I replaced the nylon/plastic stop
washer with a rubber grommet but I don’t think it will last very
long, the stop for the window in the upward direction is too harsh.
I am hoping I can install a switch to the mount for the motor and
use the upward window stop to depress the switch and open the dc
supply to the motor. This will lessen the stress on the motor and
be a less harsh way to stop the window in the upward direction.
I haven’t looked at the wires for the window motor, but if the
power is supplied from the rocker switch, then hopefully a push to
break switch will work as the downward ‘reverse’ supply should come
from another set of wires from the rocker switch.
I have saved your photos of the measurements and will be aiming for
that when I am through.
Thanks,
David.–
