[xj-s] Cooling system flush and fill

95 XJS 6.0 litre V12

HI,
I am going to attempt a flush and fill of the coolant system on the jag.
I need some advice so as to NOT get any air pockets in the system
when I refill it.

  1. What is the “safe” precedure to flush and fill??

  2. What brand of coolant do you recommend? I was thinking the orange 5 year kind ??

Thanks for the input.

In reply to a message from JBoris4325@aol.com sent Tue 4 Mar 2003:

I recently replaced all of my coolant/heater hoses and, per ‘‘the
Book’’, installed a generic Tee into the heater supply hose (the
hose between the right side coolant rail and the Heater Control
Valve in the middle of the firewall). The Tee came from a
Prestone ‘‘Flush Kit’’ which I think I got at WalMart.

I had the car’s front wheels up on ramps to raise the radiator
bleed bolt (brass colored bolt on the upper left side of radiator)
as high as possible (above the crossover pipe fill neck). When
refilling coolant, the bleed bolt was off and the Tee was open.
Filled until the Tee started to leak, closed it, and filled more
until it ‘‘maxed out’’. Put the bleed bolt back and ran the car
until warm, let it cool, then filled some more. Repeated a couple
of times, squeezing the Upper Rad Hoses and the 3 hoses to the air
bleed pipe (across the top of the Radiator) in between. Drove the
car a little and filled a little more. Seems to stay full now.

When I put the Tee into the heater supply hose, I had to decide
between that and a filter in that hose (also as per ‘‘the Book’’). I
had asked the List if anyone had ever tried to put both a Tee and
Filter into that hose (which probably won’t fit), or if there was
an opinion about which is more important, but I got no response…

Email me if I wasn’t clear about anything.
