Hi, I need suggestions or a solution on how to fix this frustrating
issue.
When I turn on the lights, the interior dash lights, do not always
turn on. This problem just started happening. I’ve checked the
wire harness connections behind the instrument cluster and it
appears fine with a good connection.
The exterior lights always come on (or respond)without hesitation.
If the dash lights don’t come on immediately, they will sometimes
come on after traveling a few miles down the road. Playing with
the light switch doesn’t seem to have any impact on their response
either. They just go on when they chose to. If they chose to.
Could it be a bad relay? Could it be in the light switch itself?
Again, after having the car for several years and driven it over
30k miles, it just started doing this recently.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions or help.–

The symptom suggests a dirty/loose/corroded connection …somewhere…but
a component problem isn’t entirely out of the question, either.
I’m not familiar with the later cars but on the oldies a common bugaboo is
the dimmer rheostat. You gotta start somewhere…and the rheostat is as good
a place as any, IMHO.
Do you have a wiring schematic? If so it’ll show where the related
connectors, ground points, etc are located
Others will chime in, hopefully with advice more specific to the later cars.

May I jump in here? I am the proud owner of an XJ-SC and note
that all the dash lights are very dim even on full brightness.
Also the warning lights (ie turn indicator) are almost
imperceptible in daylight. Do I just need higher wattage
globes?–
