[xj-s] Decision Time

I’ve spent several weeks recovering from hip surgery so I could
keep my cool while entering and exiting my coupe. During this time
my fingernail have become disgustingly clean and I’ve had
opportunity to contemplate the next project. Coolong it is. I’ve
never had a cooling issue in the 18 months I’ve owned the car, so
it was never a priority. I loosened the condenser mounts from the
bottom and gained enough access to removed gobs of debris between
it and the radiator. I have decided a radiator replacement with
electric fans was due. While I’m in the area a newer GM alternator
in the air pump position, long since removed. Finally the lutz mod
and coolant filters. If I get ambitious, maybe individual bank
coolant temp gauges?
I have decided to stay with the original radiator configuration for
a couple reasons. First, after reading Bernie E’s post on the
subject it seems well thought out and reasonable. It saves
fabricating plumbing to accomodate a single pass system. Second, my
parts car came with a complete hose replacement kit.Saves $.My
question to the forum is advice on sources for an original
configuration aluminum radiator& thermostats and their experiences
with quality .Good to get back to the grime.–

D.J.:

Welcome back from post surgery recovery. It seems yours came out
quite well. My Dad’s didn’t do so well. But it had to be as the
femur came right out of the detiorated socket. Not enough good bone
to affx the prosthesis. But, he managed with one crutch. Mom did
hers at a much later age and did well. But, was told to avoid deep
squats and to use a walker away from home. She and the walker
became best buddies. She was afraid of another fall. My MIL had
hers in her mid nineties. Surgery fine. Ambulation mot so good.
Some walker, but mostly chair bound. Again,. afraid of a fall.
Well, enough off topic.

As to temp readiongs from each bank, I think that is a great idea.
Not only gadgety, but practical. I used to put a sensr in each bank
of my old Fords, and a double pole, double throw switch to read
each bank on the same guage. With the right sensors, one might add
a guage and read sump oil and trans oil temps on anoher guage.

And, if one really wanted to get gadgety, read coolant temp
entering the radiator and exiting it. Same guage mebbe, different
sensors and switch?? I’m getting into shaky ground for me,
electrickery.

Caveat, mess with lighter stuff for a while , before pulling a
radiator, they are a bit heavy!!

To your health!!

PS, I love my E fans.–
