[xj-s] Engine Fault code and OBD reader

I am new to Jaguar. I have a nice 1993 Silver XJR-S. I stupidly
turned the car on (to show off to friends) while the air cleaner
assembly was disconnected. The car immediately threw FF15 engine
fault code.
As such, I need to clear it. However, I don’t know: 1) where the
OBD reader is, and 2) what OBD reader to purchase in order to do
so. The fellas at the local Autozone have not been much help. Ask
about Jaguar… you might as well speak French!–

There is only one way to clear the code on a xjr-s and thats with
the laptop and software that zytek supplied and there is only one
in the us. its supposed to be transferred between the jag dealers
on an as needed basis. an obd reader is useless.–

IIRC, your car has the JDS (Jaguar Diagnostic System) instead of
the later OBDII. It will eventually reset itself after about 50
start ups.–

Not being aware that the only way to clear a code was with the
special software and also unaware of the 50 start process, last
summer I cleared the fault code that popped up with a normal OBDII
scanner, and it worked fine.
It is my understanding, perhaps wrong, that OBDII is universal and
not manufacturer dependant, i.e. Ford, Chevy, Jaguar, whatever, all
use the same OBDII system with the same readings and rules.

SilverXJRS ,

Congrats on getting a nice car. awa is correct about
the difference in engine control systems. Mr. Temple
US Jaguar National Service Manager informs us: “a very
limited number of cars, different Engine Management
System and transmission from the regular XJS, the need
for a LapTop computer and Zytek software to
service…”

OBD2 was not used in 1992 when the car was produced.
Your car and all of this year used OBD(1) Diagnostic
Trouble Codes. The DTCs run from #11 to #88 not
inclusive. You can read the DTC through the trip
computer by switching OFF the ignition then switching
ON the ignition. The CHECK ENGINE warning light will
display and then the DTC will show 5 seconds later on
the trip computer. If more than one DTC is flagged in
the ECM memory only the highest will be displayed.
The remaining DTCs will be displayed as the previous
is erased from memory.

The EMS data link connector is located in the left
footwell. This is a RS 232 communications which has
many types of connections and no standard causing
connection errors between devices and data transfer,
erroneous data transfer and no data transfer. So the
possibility of using a different program and cable to
connect a computer interface is slim.

So, to read codes you can use the trip computer. FF15
is air temp sensor. Located on the air inlet on the
filter cover yo uprobably had this disconnected when
starting the car. It will reset in 50 engine start
cycles unless you “set the code” again.

The other way is to get the Jaguar Dealer lap top and
cable connector and reset the code.

If anyone does have access to the lap top and can copy
the software the program may be translated to
“english”.— SilverXJRS scotthepburn@msn.com wrote:

I’ve mentioned this before on the forum but it’s worth
repeating for those of us with XJR-S models.

I was able to obtain the Zytek software and related hardware
for my XJR-S from Zytek directly. It is a bit expensive but
handy to have in the tool kit. It also took a couple months
for them to locate the correct software but it may be
quicker now that I have broken the ice.

Once they had found the software, they requested that I mail
the ECU in for testing to insure that it is the correct
software for the unit. After testing, they mail back the
ECU along with the software disk and cables (and interface
box) to connect between the computer and the car.

I worked with Dave Trevethick at Zytek in the UK. NAYYY…

This is an old program and will only run on an old 386/486
platform. The newer computers are too fast – I even tried
using my old Pentium with ‘‘slow-down’’ software but to no
avail. I picked up an old Toshiba laptop from e-Bay which
worked great with the software. The hard part was trying to
remember how to run the old version of Windows (3.1?).

Other than that, you’ll have to go with the 50 starts to
clear the code.

I hope this helps.–
