[xj-s] Forum is sounding like a geriatric ward of Jaguar owners!

After my last post on getting in and out of my car, it sounds like
a lot or even most of us are older guys…seniors to be kind. I
know I always ask for the senior discount now!
I am way past embarrassment for asking and appreciate any discount
I can get…with my retirement income!
Just for the fun of it…lets take a survey and see what the
average age is of XJS owners that reply…women excluded, of
course since dishonesty would foul the survey. Could be a
surprise…
I am 66.–

Bought first Jaguar, XJ12 when I was 25, and XJS a few years later. I have
been here since IDK 2001 or something so I don’t post much anymore.

Me, age 81 going 82. Neck and shoulders after plumbi9ng work on
dishwasher feel like 90+.

When I get to 83 and the Jaguar remains as 83, do we match???

Now, off to clean up mess and put tools away.

I’m 61 and if you turn that figure upside down (not back to
front!) that was my age when I bought my first Jaguar, a
silver blue Mk 2 3.8. This was followed by a white ex police
Mk 2 3.8 at the age of 22. Both were less than ten years old
and both were ripe as pears! I have owned my 95 4 Litre
coupe for a year and a half and love it to bits.–

Bought first Jag, ''48 Saloon in N. Ireland in 1969 when I was 25. I
wrote to Jag for help and received personal letters from Lyons and
other engineers with wiring diagrams and suggestions on how to fix
things. Would you really believe that the head of GM or any other
car company would reply to a young kid asking how to get a 20 year
old car back on the road! Real treasurs. One note came with a
wiring diagram that said it was the last such item in the files.
Now that car is a real a Jag and Lyons said that he actually went
down on the floor and played with them at night…all parts are
hand made and no sheet metal part larger than a square foot. Lots
of lead. It would probably be classed as a hazard waste dump if
anyone knew how they were built. You can make any part for it
with hand tools and while standing upright.
Saw the commercials for the V12 on the tellie on SKY TV when it
was new. No ads on BBC. and knew that I had to have one…took
another 40 years. Hard to get under the XJ-S and impossible to
crall under the dash with my feet over the back of a seat. All of
my body parts hurt after working on it. And thanks to Kirby, and
Emboden and all of the others that have made it possible to keep
this cat on the road. Impossible with out their help and advice
over the years. I think we should have a big party for all of the
guys that have kept this great car going over the years. Can any
one take this project. We could all meet in Atlanta or Disney
World or Charleston or other tourest place so the brides would have
a place to shop. Our friends from Europe and Australia and Asia
could come also…wish I had had the car when I was 20.
Hope it goes to one of these young guys when I can no longer feed
her. I am afraid that the government will outlaw it because of
fuel or such and then I will have to become a criminal and drive it
on back roads at night. I guess that I will not be able to outrun
the radios or BMW patrol cars when that time comes but will
probably give it a try when I am 90. Best to all, Harry–

I feel like one of the kids at a company picnic. I am a mere 58
years old. Funny though most of the age related maladies some of
you mention are just starting with me. Arthritis has set in on my
back. I have two fingers on my right hand that refuse to work
properly when I first get up in the morning. I remember one time in
Vietnam at the tender age of 18 getting up for a mission and my
hands hurt like hell from infections from safety wire pricks. One
of the older heads said ‘‘yea just wait till you get arthritis it
will be like that every morning’’. Well here I am! All that being
said I still love working on machines and fixing things and the
Beast keeps me happy. Some how I still manage to spend hours
crawling over and under the Beast and making her a better Beast. It
all culminates in a cruise with my baby/wife, top down and a boyish
grin on my face. We had a discussion in here a while back about the
passion most of us have about our Beasts. I am convinced as long as
I can maintain that passion I will have it around and still manage
to keep doing what ever it takes to keep such a beautiful machine
running up to par.–

60 going on immature (just ask my spouse…). Retired once,
got bored, went back to work.

I paid $350.00 for 83 XJ-S with 17,800 miles on it. The car
was completely unbutchered. The previous owner had hit a
parking block in a grocery store parking lot hard enough to
trip the inertia switch. He’d been having some problems
with it so he had it towed home and parked under a great big
tree. For over 20 years. The interior was perfect, the
body a little rough. I made it run, stripped then repainted
the body and have been driving it ever since. There’s a
little over 70k miles on it now and it’s as beautiful,
smooth and strong as ever.–

46 years young. I enjoyed reading about the owner in 1969
getting notes and such back from people like Lyons. I enjoy
every day reading from the forum and getting to know all of
you better. Look forward to many, many more years of reading
and learning from all of you older wiser gents. So great to
hear from Jag lovers from all over the world no matter what
age. I would love to be able to get together in the future
for a weekend -Why not meet in England when they have a big
jaguar meet and show and go to the factory etc.-that would
be something for a USA guy like me. Anyone else have any
thoughts on this?–

Well well…we have 15 ages to input so far and the average is 61.2
years. I would like to continue as long as the topic is active…a

Very interesting replies that I personally find intriguing.
Everyone has a great story or background to share. Not everyone
replies to the many problematic topics for various reasons and the
participation in these less serious topics can be fun for all.
Thanks and keep them coming!

Well, if one wants to smooth out spikes in averaging, a technique
is to dump ther amallest and largest and average the rest. I
realize that means, I at 81 probably get dumped. Oh well, all in
jest.
