Well, if one wants to smooth out spikes in averaging, a technique
is to dump ther amallest and largest and average the rest. I
realize that means, I at 81 probably get dumped. Oh well, all in
jest.

Carl, used to use that technique back in my aerospace
quality engineering days. We called it ‘‘removing the strays’’
from the general population for statistical process control!

Helping even more with the average, age 38.

Remember vividly the the 1st auto-show with Western car-
makers (after the iron curtain collapsed) and the shiny red
1990 XJS V12 convertible with cream leather interior – the
only V12 there. Later that year, as a freshman in college I
saw the V12 sedan (XJ40 I guess) that was the car of the UK
ambassador. The purr at idle speed from the dual exhaust
was truly amazing to a teenage boy who’d used to see on the
streets 4-cylinder ‘‘lawn-mowers on 4 wheels’’.

Never thought I’d be able to own one…love it.

I must add that the folks on this forum are absolutely
amazing!

I managed to finally get an XJ-S in 1996 at age 58. I am 72
now. A few years ago I was contemplating getting a
different car to replace the Jaguar. Then the question
crossed my mind - what would be a suitable replacement? I
could not come up with an answer so the Jag will probably be
around for awhile.

Getting in and out is not yet a problem for me. I am only
5’6’’ and 155 pounds so can easily squeeze in and out. When
exiting I do put my left hand on the door sill and kind of
twist out, pushing with my right leg. Entering and exiting
are both made easier with the top down.

My Father died at 50 years old. So as I aproched that age I started
thinking about life… And decided that after being a single
parent for 16 years. and the last of the three kids getting close
to moving out. That I would reward myself for living to be 50! I
was excited ti find that I could aford a 10 year old XJS. And I
have had my 1995 2+2 for 7 years with very few problems. except my
recent problem with the alarm. witch means that it will not
start…
Thanks

68 and retired.

I have had my Jag going on 18yrs. Mostly trouble free but when it came to trouble I’ve had the worst of the worst. Two
dropped valve seats, one on each head. Both related to heating problems which came about by radiator shop work not knowing
what they were doing and then a bad cooling system the second time.

I bought it from a dealer in Florida with 40k miles. No rust and perfect condition. It now has 160k miles and I’m into DIY.–

If you are all interested in my sorry a** story I am one of those
fools that fell in love with the Jaguar in the mid 60’s when I was
a kid. I loved the MK’IIs the MK 10’s and of course the E-types. I
lived for a time in England being an air force brat and loved all
cars, but the Jaguar always dragged me back into the fold. I had a
distant cousin who owned a BMW dealership in England but who knew
of this XJ-S would become available since the owner had parked the
car and had become bored with it. (they were a wealthy family who
had moved on to Bently’S) Anyway I opened my mouth and said if they
sold the XJ-S I would buy it in a heartbeat. Now I’m stuck with
this love, hate relationship. I only driven the car 20 miles and
have owned it four years for the mere sum of $6900.00 I get fed up
with it but have meticulasly gone through everything in the book
and other advice on this forum. I want the car to look and act like
the day it rolled out of the showroom. I’m anal that way.
Anyway I’m 53 years old and wouldn’t own another car if my life
depended on it. A V-12 are you kidding me. I have friends and co-
workers that say to me how’s that Jag coming along? When can we see
it or go for a drive? Then they might ask how I’m doing. Show up in
front of a nice restaurant with an XJ-S, I have no problem saying
Yeah that’s my car!–

You know the idea of getting a bunch of us together is intriguing.
All we would need is a hotel and a few parking places under roof
somewhere. We could line them up and swap war stories for a couple
days easy. Seriously, I would take a few days off. If you had a
group of for sures…pin the home bases on a map and pick a
central location. Just a thought.–

When I was at P&WA, one time we were assembling an experimental
engine and had a full set of turbine blades plus a few spares. Every
one had been carefully inspected, x-rayed, you name it, couldn’t have
an experimental engine fail because of a defective part. One thing
we did with these turbine blades was to install each one on a “shaker
table” and vibrate them and record the resonant frequencies, the
frequencies at which they “ring”. Lo and behold, two of those blades
rang at a frequency that was 10% off what the rest of them rang at!
We, uhhhh, chose not to run those two in the engine.

Okay, okay! So I’m 73. I see there are others older than me (like a
couple of guys 81 years old) still working on their Jags.

My stories are too numerous to tell here. But if you give a rat’s

my ‘‘book’’ here (lots of pics, because who gives a damm about the

They include driving a Jaguar-engined Cisitalia copy at 150 mph. No
big deal. My XK-E did that, too. But not with 1,000 rpm still to go
on the tach that would have approached 200 mph in 1972.

Driving an SS-100 at 100 mph was fun, too.

You have to love cars to read it.
I will say the XJ-S is a car that fits me perfectly now: it adds
the class and good looks I don’t have anymore so folks still give
me thumbs up.–

know the MGTD and Jaguar XK-E have the same track width?)–

To help the morale of the geriatric set, i’m 77, and have been in love with the XJ-S concept since it first appeared. Bought the '89 in 2000, with 120K miles on the clock. The convertible in '05. My first Jag was a Mark VII bought about 1965 for $125. It actually ran rather well. Brake problems tho. Working on the cars keeps me much younger than the calendar claims. I don’t know what I’d do without this marvelous support group. Solid info, great discussions, good humor, etc. Best wishes to all, especially to Kirby.
